Akkula Posted March 30 Posted March 30 OMG @halfmanhalfbronco Trump is going to start WORLD WAR III! Give peace a chance Trump. Just sign the cease fire already! Trump threatens tariffs on Russia over Ukraine peace deal “If I feel, if we’re in the midst of a negotiation, you could say that I was very angry, pissed off, when Putin said yesterday that — you know, when Putin started getting into Zelensky’s credibility, because that’s not going in the right location, you understand?” Trump told NBC News’s Kristen Welker during a phone interview on Sunday. Trump...Halfman, et al.....we told you so! Maybe are you pissed off enough to arm Ukraine like you should have done from the beginning? Putin is not going to negotiate peace until he knows he is beaten on the battlefield or unless he has a stalemate that threatens his regime. Quote
AlpineSummer Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 (25% additional tariffs)*0 = 0. The indirect purchases of Russian oil by U.S. firms in 3rd nations are pretty much irrelevant. Trump's anger will need a different lever to matter. Quote

So the question here is, did Trump really believe that Putin was just going to abandon his attacks on Ukraine just because Trump was his "buddy" and Trump sucked up to him? Is that how naive these Trumpists are? Trump just needed to throw Zelensky under the bus and cut off weapons and THAT would be the magic sauce for Putin to decide to stop his attack?!?!? Just blame Zelensky, call him a dictator, and tell us the "polls" of Ukraine soldiers want to stop the war so Putin would just say, "Okay." And Trump thinks Putin is going to be really fearful of his tariffs like our allies are? LLLLOOOLLLL. Maybe Trump is a great tough guy when it comes to bullying Canada but he looks pretty weak here. Tariffs, really? If he was a really big tough guy he would send them actual weapons. But Trump is just a bully who can only push around pipsqueaks and cowers away from a real fight. 1 Quote
AlpineSummer Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Trump's quote on secondary tariffs is confusing just about everyone thinking what it means. Trump would need to tariff sanction the 3rd party countries that buy Russian oil. Guess who that is. Sheesh. For now, this is nothing until it becomes something that matters. 1 Quote

Did you mean some of the U.S. European allies like Germany and others that became dependent on Russian oil and gas and were doing back door deals with them while paying less than 2% of their GDP towards NATO up until recently? What was the E.U. and NATO doing while Russia was slowly moving west? The U.S. was a little preoccupied in 2008 with the Great Recession and a housing and banking market crash. Obama then tried diplomacy with Russia and Putin went into Crimea. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/02/germany-dependence-russian-energy-gas-oil-nord-stream "How did Germany end up making such a blunder? Some argue that Merkel should have seen that Putin was taking Russia in an authoritarian direction when he announced his return to the presidency in 2011. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, Germany made no move to stop importing Russian gas, and although Merkel threatened to introduce crippling trade sanctions, German industry convinced her to hold back. But some blame a more persistent misjudgment stretching back 50 years, based on a fallacy that authoritarian countries can be transformed through trade." Quote
AlpineSummer Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 It's pretty easy to find what nations buy oil from Russia. Some buy more now. Some, no longer. Some indirect. 1 Quote

Yeah, if Trump signs off on this, I don't see a single European country following it. Especially former Eastern Block countries. Not to mention them no longer supporting us militarily. And before some magat stooge chimes in; yes, Trump has signed off on truly stupid things before, and will in the near future. Quote
