Saying Democrats caused the shutdown is kind of saying like Ukraine caused Russia to invade them.  I guess some may argue it is easier to just let Trump grab you by the pussy and not scream about it, though!

The same reason they would have supported Germany invading Poland. Just to throw their weight around.

Limited to Constitutionally required functions. Defense, Justice, interstate commerce, etc.

Defend life, liberty, property.

Phucking over Vets and the elderly is obviously a Constitutional obligation in your world

Big enough and no bigger. I am not an anarchist but I also don't think the government's definition of general welfare means letting everyone give up and be taken care of. We need welfare reform in a big way, to incentivize getting off of assistance instead of generational welfare

It's hard to get off assistance when you are to old or handicapped to work.

Most welfare programs should be delegated to the states, like Medicaid. I am in favor of keeping Social Security but only with major reform.

Government involvement in medical care has driven up cists because big pharma charges whatever they want. It's bankrupting our country. I would prefer policies to open the market to more competition instead of regulating the sector into a few favorite companies.

Nice try. The GOP never has and never will accept that.

It's nothing with them.

The fact is the “market” for healthcare is largely made up of nation states and big Pharma.  The U.S. only hurts itself competitively by divvying up our market power.  It’s especially egregious given the amount of basic NIH research Pharma leverages.

AFDC was eliminated 30 years ago under Clinton. The program that replaced has a 5-year eligibility limit.

I know, and welfare reform was good thing.

AFDC and it's successor TANF is just one aspect of public assistance as you know, however.

Yea and the other big ones are Medicaid, SNAP and Section 8. If you aren’t touching those, you’re just nibbling around the edges. And if you want those programs cut, in what ways do you want them cut? I know a lot of people bring up work requirements, but for many reasons I am not convinced those save very much money at all. Same goes with “finding fraud”.

As far as I see it the only way to MEANINGFULLY cut spending on those programs is to cut the benefits. Meaning, raising the income limits, reducing payouts for section 8, TANF and SNAP, and potentially making SNAP and Section 8 temporary in a similar way that TANF is.

And if you support those things, that’s fine. But I find it unhelpful to be vague when it comes to welfare programs. It is clear what programs would need to be cut to save any real money, so the discussion should be centered around those specific programs and how they would be cut.

The new GOP spending bill includes a 8% increase on military spending.  As in an increase to the biggest expense line on our budget.

Yeah.

What's even more egregious is that the largest US pharma companies exploit a tax loophole that allows them to pay zero US corporate income tax...

Social Security and Medicare both exceed Defense.

Were those increased or cut?

I don’t know. I was just looking at the 2024 budget categories.

Right but the are entitlements.  Defense is the largest discretionary budget.
