No one "wins" with a shutdown. The question for the parties is where that line in the sand is. It's pretty clear the Dems failed on messaging this last election. It's also abundantly clear their constituents ARE NOT HAPPY with how they've been handling things ie voting FOR cabinet picks and generally being ineffectual.

Only limp biscuit Schumer could possibly be waffling about trying to give the GOP cover in this situation. It's not about winning it IS about refusing to aid and abet a budget process where the Dems have had no say with constituents who want them to effing not be a bunch of doormats.  It's about not losing. And losers they would be if they bail these clowns out.

He defined what about 90% or more of government spending is for so......

Big enough and no bigger. I am not an anarchist but I also don't think the government's definition of general welfare means letting everyone give up and be taken care of. We need welfare reform in a big way, to incentivize getting off of assistance instead of generational welfare

When you say “welfare”, what exactly do you mean? SNAP? Section 8? Medicaid?

Most welfare programs should be delegated to the states, like Medicaid. I am in favor of keeping Social Security but only with major reform.

Government involvement in medical care has driven up cists because big pharma charges whatever they want. It's bankrupting our country. I would prefer policies to open the market to more competition instead of regulating the sector into a few favorite companies.

I mean, the programs i listed are the big ones. So your thoughts on Section 8/SNAP?

Government interference in the housing and agriculture sectors has not resolved the underlying issues. Some say housing projects are part of the biggest problems with generational poverty. I would be in favor of temporary programs to help, but able bodied should be working. These programs should incentivize getting off them.

Those on social programs should be accountable in trying to better their lives.

Preach on preach on brother, I'm with you.

Those gifts the government give poor people too often become handcuffs.  The big issue has never been how much money the government spends on those programs, it's been the negative impact of those programs on the very people they are supposed to help.

Incentivizing fathers to leave, so the mom can collect AFDC, was not helpful in building strong family units and male role models.

Giving people a daily ration of fish, while taking away their ability to use a fishing pole in the process, is not helping poor people.

I don’t really care what “some say”. What do you say? Do you think SNAP and Section 8 should be abolished?

AFDC was eliminated 30 years ago under Clinton. The program that replaced has a 5-year eligibility limit.

Oh wow

So the Dems look like they're going to vote for it because........

They are coalescing around the opinion that the GOP WANTS a shut down and would be in no hurry to end it. You read that correctly. The notion is a shitdown, or shutdown plays into the OSG and Elmo's hands where they slash and burn at will while no ones minding the store. Who knows what would be left when the GOP finally got around to ending the shitdown shutdown. They may have de facto shuttered numerous agencies with no chance of bringing them back

How perverted is that? Are we really that far down the rabbit hole and edging towards life support?

Trump got the rightwing in line. Is there anything Trump can’t do.

Greenland the left said was Trump being crazy. March 11th Greenland is now going to be territory of the USA.

A shut down is never a good idea.

That said, lemonade from lemons, Dems can hope it leads to removal of the filibuster and fiddle while Rome burns waiting for the midterms I guess.

They want independence, not to be part of another country.

I absolutely detest Nacho Duce. I believe he’s taking us down a road that leads to a banana republic. But can anyone point out an example where a party ever benefited by causing a shutdown?

The Magats believe there will be a benefit to cutting off veterans, the elderly, and the infirm.

Aside from cruelty and suffering, I have yet to figure out how that makes America Great.

Or, maybe, that is their version of greatness.
