azgreg Posted February 6 Posted February 6 The wife wants to take a day trip Sunday. Any recommendations? Quote
Posturedoc Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I haven’t done much rubbernecking around southern Nevada, but I know there are some neat spots closer than what I’ll recommend. My in-laws, now in-law, and soon to be gone-laws live near St. George, so The Wife! and I occasionally drive there from Reno. Every time we make that drive we stop at Cathedral Gorge State Park, which is just northwest of Panaca. It’s otherworldly. It’s a 2-2.5 hr drive, depending on where in Vegas you live. Take a picnic lunch and walk around for a couple or three hours. You won’t be disappointed. Quote

azgreg Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 When I lived in Phoenix we liked to take a day trip every once in a while to Jerome. It's a little old mining town in the mountains outside Prescott. They have some nice bars and a bunch of art galleries. This is the kind of thing we're looking for. 1 Quote

But, I've been on a turnaround trip to Laughlin. It was fun. Stayed in Boulder once for work. The town looked awesome at night. Very western style- ala wild west. Wish I could have explored it during the day, but was at work. Quote
SharkTanked Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Boulder City, Red Rock, Valley of Fire are all very close to Vegas and worth seeing. If you can take 3 hrs each way you can do Southern Utah (Cedar City), or go north to Ely, or Great Basin Nat. Park. Those are pushing it for a day trip though. The Utah Shaksperean Festival in Cedar City in the summer is world renowned and well worth a visit for a weekend trip. They have a recreation of the Globe theater and everything. 2 Quote

Virginia City might be similar but too far away from Vegas Quote

Just_Chris Posted February 7 Posted February 7 The national wildlife refuge is pretty cool but I'd say hit that up in spring when things are blooming Quote
azgreg Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Looks like we're going to check out some ghost towns. 1 Quote

azgreg Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 Decided, in order to get home for the SB in time, we're just going to the wildlife refuge instead. Quote

There is a trailhead to a quick hike to hidden valley and a really neat spring and cabin there. It's like a 3 mi round-trip hike if memory serves. Really neat oasis spot out in the middle of the desert. Quote
