Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was spotted in a wheelchair Wednesday after suffering a fall while leaving the Senate chamber earlier in the day.

The former GOP leader took the fall in view of reporters while walking to a Republican Conference lunch; he was then spotted leaving the lunch on his feet, walking the handful of steps to Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s nearby office surrounded by staff. He later left in the wheelchair through a back exit.

Multiple senators who attended the lunch said McConnell participated fully in the meeting. A spokesperson for the senator did not respond to a request for comment.

Capitol Attending Physician Brian Monahan, who leads an office run by Navy medical personnel who care for lawmakers, came by the lunch but told reporters he had not seen McConnell.

Retire Please

This definitely fits Mitch, but you could say this to half the old farts on the Hill. Congress is just too old.

I just don't understand why these people try to hang on for so long.  This is not China or North Korea where retiring could be a death sentence.  McConnell should have gracefully bowed out the first time his rubber band snapped a couple of years ago.  We should not have Senators dying in office of old age a la Dianne Feinstein.  It makes no sense.

I don't think it's necessarily a problem that a politician is old as long as they still have their facilities about them.  Even being in a wheelchair is fine as long as someone is still mentally sharp and can contribute in a meaningful way (to the service of this country, not to their pension/personal wealth). It can be argued that Mitch crossed that threshold long ago, but that's for another discussion. Wisdom is gained by age and through experience after all, so I'm not opposed to our leaders being old geezers as long as they can function just as it has been with a lot of cultures through history.

It's possible the mentally handicapped have been elected president at least twice so maybe. Ageism. Ableism. Allisms.

Harding and Coolidge weren't THAT bad.

But seriously.  Trump speaks at a 4th grade level.  Sadly, I don't think it is by design and even more sadly...people love it.

Man, we could use a Coolidge and Mellon (Sec. of Treasury) now instead of the dotard co-presidents.  I started this book (linked below) years ago, but never finished.  I met Amity Shlaes in Boise some years earlier when she was doing publicity for The Forgotten Man (Great Depression).  Excellent writer.  Don't necessarily agree w/all her economic analysis, but really enjoyed the Great Depression book.  No clue where either are so would need to buy or hit the library to finish and/or read again.

God, wait till he declines to pre-school levels.

I’m assisting a film festival in my area and one of the films is about aging in Belgium.  We got to talk to the director about what she learned.

According to the movie director, of all the elderly people featured in the movie, everyone said that nobody ever asked them “what they were planning for the future.”

When finally asked, most of the interviewees did not hesitate on their plans (writing a book, leaning an instrument or language, etc), which was surprisingly ambitious to younger people.

Society assumes when we get old, we have no future or plans, and only focuses on the now and physical needs.

Just giving a perspective.  And next time you talk to an older person/loved one, ask them what they are planning for the future.  They will like it.
