VincentVegaBond2 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I was thinking there was a good chance the Rebels would take a little step back from last year with loss of Boone twins, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would be a bottom half of the conference team. This will definitely not be a year to fondly remember for UNLV basketball. 1 Quote

UNLV2001 Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Two solid wins - then a total collapse The way UNLV is playing & the damaged psyche could really ding the remaining games Outside of Air Force at home, there aren't many games left that look like 'wins' -- a 1-8 finish is possible Quote

This will definitely not be a year to fondly remember for UNLV basketball. It’s been more than a decade since you’ve had a year to fondly remember. I hope UNLV finds their coach next year. Seems like you have the proper leadership in place, but even then it’s always a gamble. We need the new MW to be strong at the top. Quote

Qwelish Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Some of the players look disinterested at times. Like they can't wait for it to be over. We could see more of a collapse the rest of the way. Quote
UNLV2001 Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 The UNLV men's basketball team (11-12, 5-7) was defeated 71-62 by Boise State (16-7, 8-4) on Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. Three Runnin' Rebels scored in double figures, led by Dedan Thomas Jr.'s 20 points and Bear Cherry's 19. Julian Rishwain grabbed a career-high nine rebounds with four assists. The Broncos had four players score 13 or more points, led by Tyson Degenhart's 16. He also had seven rebounds and three blocks. Andrew Meadow added 14 points, while Alvaro Cardenas and Javan Buchanan each scored 13 points with eight rebounds. RJ Keene had a game-high 10 boards, while Cardenas had a game-high six assists. TURNING POINT: At the end of the first half, which included six lead changes and five ties, Boise State led 33-29. The Broncos scored the first nine points of the second half to go up 42-29 with 16 minutes left. WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE: UNLV used a 6-0 run, ignited by its defense, to trim Boise State's lead to 56-52 with 4:57 to play. The run was made up of three straight steals, leading to three straight dunks. The Broncos, however, pushed their lead back to nine with 1:26 to play. STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV shot just 1 of 16 on 3-pointers, including 0 of 9 in the second half. QUOTABLE: "Against a good team like Boise, we had a couple of lapses that ended up costing us. They did a good job of making us pay. Our confidence is rattled and we were a little hesitant. We just need that spark and it is going to turn things for the better. When we were aggressive, when we made plays for each other, when we attacked the rim, when we did what we needed to do defensively, sliding and staying in front and knowing what each other wanted to do, we had some really good possessions. But just a couple of possessions with offensive rebounds and a good play made here or there is what made the difference for them." - UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger OTHER NOTES: - Boise State swept the regular-season series with UNLV. - It was UNLV's fifth straight loss. - Jailen Bedford added 11 points and six rebounds. - Cherry was 9 of 11 from the field and had two blocks. - Boise State went to the free-throw line 15 more times than UNLV. - Boise State led in rebounds 45-34. - UNLV turned Boise State's 14 turnovers into 13 points. UNLV committed just five turnovers. - UNLV led in points in the paint 42-20, but Boise State led in second-chance points 10-4 and bench scoring 26-15. - UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,250 straight games. NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV's next game will be at Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT. The contest will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network and ESPN Radio Las Vegas. 1 Quote

UNLV2001 Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 https://lasvegassun.com/news/2025/feb/04/unlv-basketball-rattled-after-fifth-straight-loss/ UNLV basketball 'rattled' after fifth straight loss Seventeen days can be a short time or a long time, depending on the context. For the UNLV basketball team, the past 17 days have felt like an eternity. The Scarlet and Gray suffered their fifth straight loss Tuesday, falling at home to Boise State, 71-62. The defeat dropped UNLV to 11-12 on the season and 5-7 in Mountain West play, good for seventh place in the conference standings. One would have to go back more than six years to find UNLV’s last five-game losing streak, which came when Marvin Menzies’ squad was beaten in the final five contests of the 2017-18 regular season. After Boise State finished off its season sweep of the Scarlet and Gray, head coach Kevin Kruger admitted his team is feeling the weight of the prolonged streak. “Our confidence is obviously rattled,” Kruger said. “We need that spark that’s going to turn things for the better.” Tuesday’s game was lost in the minutes surrounding halftime. UNLV went into the break missing 9 of its last 11 shots, then shot 1-of-13 to open the second half. During that time, Boise embarked on a 21-6 run and opened double-digit lead in front of a subdued crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center. One component that will need to improve if UNLV is to find the win column anytime soon is outside shooting. The Scarlet and Gray made just 1-of-16 from 3-point range, coming dangerously close to snapping the program’s streak of consecutive games with a made 3-pointer (currently an all-time record of 1,250 and counting — barely). During the five-game losing streak UNLV has shot 24-of-95 from beyond the arc, which works out to an icy 25.2%. Quote

8-Bit UNLV Fan Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I have a fan-level of hate for Leon Rice. The #1 villain of all of sports. But I hate UNLVs stupid 3-point record more. If Boise could have prevented UNLV from hitting a 3, I could have kissed him. The 3-point record makes us lose games - I'm convinced more than ever. 1 Quote

Agree on both points! Leon Rice is a tool (I'll never forget that obnoxious scream in Dave Rice's face when he found out UNLV's game winner didn't count in that OT game years back). The 3pt streak is a meaningless record that needs to die. The fact that the team may even think about it as opposed to, oh I dunno, winning basketball games (!) drives me nuts. Even the Runnin' Rebel social media tweets about it 🤦 1 Quote

Utterly meaningless and ridiculous "record", I feel it's small time as hell to even bring it up and I hate when 2001 mentions it like 5 times a game. Quote
Jersey Rebels Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Not a stupid record and if you can’t hit threes in today’s basketball you aren’t winning games. Quote

When is the last team a team didn't make a 3 in the modern game? I'd imagine it's been many years for any MW program, but IDK. I highly doubt that it has any affect on the players. UNLV will probably have the record until the world ends. Quote
