FresnoFacts Posted February 4 Posted February 4 The Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee sent a letter to the GAO asking for a review of how student fees for athletics are impacting college costs. Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) specifically seems interested in "federal student aid provided under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (Title IV) provides students with grants and loans to cover the costs of tuition, fees, and other education-related expenses. At the same time, the data on spending on college athletics raises distinct questions about how schools fund their athletic programs and the extent to which Title IV student aid subsidizes these costs through students’ tuition and fees.” https://edworkforce.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=412173 https://edworkforce.house.gov/uploadedfiles/ltr_to_gao_athletics.pdf The next athletic department financial squeeze may be starting up. 2 Quote
Headbutt Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Sounds like Tim Walberg has a freshman daughter at some college, and just noticed a line item in his bill. I'm glad somebody is looking into it, but as a whole it's not some sort of rip off. Abused at some schools, but less than a nuisance at others that try to give an ROI on the athletic fee. Quote
KingSpartan Posted February 4 Posted February 4 The power conferences are behind this. Time to pull up the ladder behind them. Quote
Bigd Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Generally love this, except Nevada just finally passed a fee to get our indoor practice field built. Quote

thedude15 Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I went to a smaller college (in terms of athletics). The fee was like $50 a semester (like 15 years ago). Currently it is $89. BUT that gets you into all the standard games for free and even when the basketball team was good and they had to limit student tickets it was never actually a problem. There was probably 3 games in 4 years where they ran out of students tickets. Two times they just gave the student tickets in other areas of the arena and one time students where out of luck (went North Carolina came to town). You still have to pay for NCAA tournament (minor sport tournaments, my school never hosted the NCAAT for men's basketball) cause well the NCAA is greedy and doesn't let the school keep the ticket revenue of tournament they host and you could get into 99% of games for free. So for me it was worth way way way more than $50 a semester for all the games I went to. For a decent chunk of students (ie basically just go to the homecoming basketball game and main rivalry game) it was probably a wash. For most students (ie one who are not athletes and never go to any games) it was a waste. BUT there are a ton of fees/programs that increased the cost of education that I got zero benefit from. So in the sense of giving students options or doing various activities they might like but other students wont it was worth it on the whole for the school to have the fee. 1 1 Quote
ChiTownHuskie Posted February 4 Posted February 4 All schools need to do is move around the fees and call it something else (like institutional support). For example, look at Colorado vs Colorado St institutional support and student athletic fees. Colorado is getting $30 million from institutional support but that's just money in a different pot that state funding and students are paying. Colorado St Colorado 1 Quote
Spaztecs Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Why doesn't Congress look at the real reasons why College is so damned expensive ? Predatory lending rates, Institutional greed and not delivering quality degrees need to be brought to heel. 2 Quote
LoboMan59 Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Call it ‘institutional facilities surcharge’ that covers all facilities and campus buildings on University property. Quote
