Who's cooking what on Super Bowl Sunday?  I'm doing cheesesteaks (Philly).  I could have gone with barbeque (KC) but Sunday is the day I visit my mother and my prep and cooking time is limited.

cornbread should be meh imo. it's there to sop up tastier things like beef stew or chili. if it has too much of its own flavor then it can make those awesome combinations... weird

My wife makes cornbread with honey baked into it.  Good for cornbread

Cornbread is fckn awesome.  I guess some people aren't invited to the cookout.

Then again, some people only like the Lakers bc of LeBron and think that Americans aren't fat bc fast food is cheaper than eating healthy.

I hate that logic so much re Fast Food.  It is NOT cheaper than eating healthy, too many Americans just can't take care of themselves.  They don't know how to shop and cook.  It needs to be taught in school.

It's true.  If you know how to shop and cook its way cheaper to eat healthier than to eat fast food.

I eat like a king and my meals average out to about 4 bucks per person.

A whole ball top sirloin costs about 70 bucks.  Butcher it up you get around 20 steaks and a coulotte.  A big bag of frozen veggies is about 14 bucks, and contains 20 or so servings.  A 10 pound bag of baked potatoes is about 11 bucks after tax.  Congrats, you fed a family of 4 a steak dinner with steamed veggies and a baked potato for about 4 bucks per person.

A whole chicken is about 5 bucks to 8 bucks depending on where you buy it.  Feeds a family of 4.  Then you can use the carcass for soup the next day.

Pork tenderloin is about 3 bucks a pound (2.25 at Costco right now).

A 20 pound bag of rice is about 25 bucks.  Contains around 500 servings.

I took cooking in 8th grade. The teacher made it fun and got everyone involved by putting students into groups and having competitive cook-offs. I really enjoyed it. That was a long time ago.

Yep.  If you know how to shop and cook you can eat like a king FAAAAAR cheaper than fast food.

Sadly, too many of Americas poor do not know how to take care of themselves.  That's why the eat fast food.  Not because it is cheaper.  Because they don't know anything.

So let's change that then to "easier" than eating healthy. We are a largely (and large ) spoiled and lazy people who rather choose the easy way than the right way.

We used to eat out a lot just for convenience, and laziness. When Covid came along and we were at home much more often our habits changed and we definitely have fun preparing meals at home now.

It's also a knowledge gap as much as it is people being lazy.  I was raised by a single mom who made $7.50 an hour and my depression era grand parents.  Every meal was home cooked.  Learning to cook was part of my childhood and one of my favorite memories is cooking with my mom and grandma.

Tonight I am making meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy  and French cut green beans.

Two pounds of 88% lean ground beef at $4.50 a pound, 5 large potatoes (could do it cheaper even with instant) from my 10 pound bag.  Instant gravy.  Panco bread crumbs.  Maybe $2 worth of seasongs/ketchup/apple cider vinegar.  Total price of the meal is about 16 bucks rounding up.

It is going to feed me, my mom, my dad, my sister and my 2 year old niece.  5 people and I might have enough for a meatloaf sandwich tomorrow left over for my lunch.  5-6 meals for 16 bucks.  And it is going to be DAAAAANNNNKKKKK

It's a great way to bond as a family.
