I back in when I'm in the parking garage in the office.  It makes leaving easier.  But I'm not inconveniencing anybody as there's usually not anybody waiting.

Typical megalomaniac number cruncher.

Doubling down on the megalomaniac.

Definitely not science! This is fun venting banter :P

Backing into a parking spot certainly is a skill that should be practiced a lot before deploying it in a pressure packed parking lot, so I understand when some doofus with little ability takes seven attempts to slot his/her whip into that space, but that kind of spacial-awareness challenged driver is probably going to need a few starts and stops to get out of that space had he/she nosed into. Some people just suck at driving.

I’m curious, though, about what you Karins believe is/are the reason(s) people back into their spaces?

KarEn? ;)

I personally think it's because most have an anxiety of backing into walking and/or driving "traffic". If you park normally, you have to backup into an active area. If you backup into a parking spot instead, where there is no traffic or pedestrians, you can pull out in a forward direction with better sight lines when you leave, alleviating that anxiety.

Wrong! They back in because they’re pretentious f@cks! Haven’t you learned anything reading this board?

But really, some of what you wrote is exactly why one should consider backing first. I can’t speak to the state of mind of your average back first parker, but I can tell you that backing first is what UPS taught its delivery drivers when I worked there 30+ years ago before my career change. The main reason why is as you wrote, because the driver has already scanned the parking spot on approach, so the likelihood of somebody somebody slipping in there for you to run them over is pretty slim, and there wont be any cars easing in behind you. Even if a driver were to walk behind his/her nosed in vehicle before getting in, starting it and proceeding to back out, conditions behind them have much more time to change, and the likelihood of an accident with a moving vehicle or pedestrian is much higher. The caveat is, of course, that professional drivers practice their trade, where your average driver may never have done so before deciding to try it in a busy parking lot.

To summarize, I back first whenever possible. Eat shit, especially the numbers guy.

One of the biggest changes I've had to get used to in NZ that I'm still not 100% comfortable with is here the pediatrician does NOT have the right away in a parking lot. It's the pedestrians fault if they are behind a car backing up. Parking lots are treated like streets and you have to allow cars to pass by before crossing to your parked car.

Are Pretentious IMO

I live across the street from the beach on a very busy road. We back into our driveway because, when arriving, it’s easier to time the three-point turn it takes to back into our driveway. Versus trying to back out of our driveway with beach traffic on the road we are backing into.

I think people who back into parking spaces are making the same calculus. Also, the proliferation of backup cameras makes it easier.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

I sometimes back into parking spots.  Depends on my mood and the traffic.  I’m not gonna hold cars up to be a pretentious fuck on purpose.

Yeah no problem in general.  But if yer gonna hold up traffic in a parking lot just so you can back your piece of shit sled into the 4th row of cars in a tight ass parking lot while you make everyone around sit and wait for your ass.  That's just being a dick.  Sorry.

Now let's talk about parking lot holders who stand and block them and refuse to move lol.

Parking lot holders should be ran over…don’t see that kinda crap in Wyoming much, if at all.

what, you think pediatricians are somethin' special!?

sometimes I back-in but usually I look for a "pull-thru", even if it means I have to walk a couple hundred feet more

Every pickup I've owned since the early 2000's has been a crew cab long bed. If you don't back those in, some pricks will park as close to you as possible making it hard as hell backing out.

do you use it as your "daily driver"?

that'd be a pain in the ass

I do. I use my work truck every day and during the winter, my wife drives her truck every day (it's also a crew cab long bed). She does have a newer camaro that she drives during summer and no, we don't back that in.
