Really hoping for a personal silver lining here in that a lot of hard-to-find Canada-bound Kentucky bourbon finds its way to local distribution channels. 🤞😬🤞 Quote

Trump gets a PR win that he forced Canada to act. Tariffs don't go into effect. But, I think there is a lot of PR involved in this one. Canadians don't want to be pushed around by the US, or look like "little brother", so it is not that simple, I guess. I'm sure the tariffs are popular in Canada right now, but when they go into effect, and the pain is felt, everyone will feel differently. Same with the US for Trump base. Regardless, there probably isn't that much harm in trying to police drug trafficking which I guess is a problem in some parts of the US. To Trump --- this whole thing could have been addressed with negotiations before tariffs were ever waived around, but he wanted a big show and he has gotten it (at least with Mexico) You are big on the "PR Win." How about he ACTUALLY gets the border under control? Gets, the wall built, etc? How about instead of performative, "lib owning" fleeting moves, he actually makes some ACTUAL improvements for the country. 1 Quote
Akkula Posted February 3 Posted February 3 @The Barber. Please tell us how this was a huge PR victory please! The fentanyl czar... from a country where almost zero fentanyl comes! LOL Trump is such a blowhard. Does he think he is going to do this every month and get some token troops and a "fentanyl czar" every month and he will proclaim victory on the border lol. 1 Quote

Sure: (1) Mexico - Trump (right or wrong) said he was going to strong arm Mexico into taking some sort of action to "stop the drug trafficking". It was his campaign promise. He announced tariffs (really obnoxiously without ever even trying to negotiate with Mexico on the issue). Then Mexico announced retaliatory tariff. Democrats were thrilled as Trump looked to be killing the economy. Then before the tariffs ever went into effect, the two sides agreed to drop the tariff wars, and revert to the status quo, with the only change being Mexico announcing it was doing something about its border --- 10,000 Mexican Troops to police drug trafficking. Trump gets his PR / virtue signal. I.e., That he made Mexico dance and do something on drug trafficking. He can say that Mexico responded because of his tariff. I guess it is a 30-day pause, and further negotiation. (2) Canada - Looks like the same thing played out. Canada PM just announced / emphasized $1.3B of NEW choppers, tech, personnel, coordination, all to stop flow of fentanyl. Looks like Canada just created a new position - Fentanyl Czar. Trump gets his PR / virtue signal to his base. That his tariff made the Canucks jump (it provoked a tweet by the Trudeau naming Trump conversation). https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/02/03/trump-presidency-news/ This is politics. Trump got the PR / virtue signal he was after, and tariffs didn't happen. His base think he just fulfilled a campaign promise on the fentanyl issue, and that he strong armed a response from Mexico and Canada. Quote

So help me out, the Japanese media (NHK) reported that this deal was agreed to on December 17 when Biden was still president. So does that mean Trump abandoned his "golden age of America" and his "beautiful word; tariffs for the Canucks to send a few more mounties to the Manitoba, North Dakota border? Jesus he's a cuck 2 Quote
