Trump has announced 25% tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico. His rationale is to help curb fentanyl.  Don’t think it’ll help Heir Trump.

The new Mexican president is playing hardball when it comes to her stance on returning illegal immigrants from the U.S. that flowed through Mexico. I'm curious when she'll be putting the full hammer down and playing hardball with the cartels that are actually in control of her country? Will she stick to her plan, or will she end up being afraid and bought and paid for like many of the past Mexican presidents?

Is this where Trump announces a tariff, the opposing country panics and calls for a summit, and they negotiate a deal and the tariff is rescinded?

Apparently the EU is also in panic because of Trump threats for tariffs on their cars.

The European Union (EU) has a 10% tariff on finished US motor vehicles. The EU also has tariffs on most US auto parts, ranging from 3% to 4.5%.

In contrast the US has a 2.5% tariff on finished European motor vehicles.

Porsche and Audi May Build Vehicles in U.S. to Avoid Tariffs, Report Claims

Unlike parent company Volkswagen, the Audi and Porsche brands currently have no production sites in America.

Based on what I can tell what Porsche and Audi pay their auto workers, this might not be a bad Idea. On the negative side, it would take jobs away from Germany and other European countries that also build the cars and manufacture Porsche and Audi parts.

The question is why has the US sat by and allowed the EU to put tariffs on US made cars at 10%, and then we only put a tariff on European made cars at 2.5%?

I am guessing there are plenty of Europeans that would love to buy a Corvette, Mustang, midsize Truck, or some other desired American car.  That also goes for Japanese brands whose vehicles are manufactured in the US, and being exported to Europe.

Fair point.

If you think that any of these EU automakers are giving 2 shits about what the current admin is doing, you are drinking the coolaid.  They have the capital and bankroll to wait out whatever this admin is going to do and bankroll the next election to favor them.  You lemmings are so caught up in the nearest cliff to jump over to realize what the long game is really about.  Wave your flags and pat each other on the back....you have no power or influence over anything.   Will stand on that line whichever "team" wins.......

You have no power or influence, nor does this entire board on these issues either. But somehow you felt obligated and entitled enough to let us know. It's just a discussion about an automotive article from Road & Track magazine that's been around for decades. You know something different besides the norm here. Other publications are reporting the same thing as well regarding Audi and Porsche joining their parent VW in the U.S. and possibly the reasons why.

Trump has been talking about putting tariffs on countries that don't treat U.S. companies fairly since his first term. So knowing this, how did that big bankroll work out for the EU automakers in the last election?

Well hopefully this latest gambit goes better than his blanket attempted buyout of FAA Air Traffic controllers.  It all seemed so easy and simple just to say you want to cut the federal workforce without all the messy details on who and what to cut, didn't it?

Yes, I am sure that tariffs threats are a new and novel way to get someone to the table,  maybe if you are in the 1850s.  But what happens when Canada, Mexico, and the EU all decide to coordinate and say, "okay" and call the bluff for a period of time?  Mexico's president doesn't seem to be having any of the bullshit, in particular.

Not following.

What does an "attempted buyout of FAA Air Traffic controllers" have to do with tariffs and inflation (topic of this thread)?   Seems out of left field to turn this to Air Traffic Controller jobs?

Regarding threat of tariffs --- didn't he just use that as a threat to get Columbia to agree to take military plans full of deported immigrants?

The point is that Trump's big plans and executive orders have so far just been a lot of bluster and bullshit and are already backfiring badly.  You guys swore up and down that he was going to fix everything but his buyouts have already blown up in your faces.  His plan to "fix everything with tariffs" is also a half-baked line of bullshit that sounds good on the campaign trail but is so very hard to actually implement.  We told you it would be chaos and it is already chaos!

He said he was going to do tariffs as soon as he got into office.  Then he was going to do them on February 1.  Now he is pushing them off again?

What exactly is he asking Canada and Mexico to do exactly?  Give us better trade terms or something?  No, he wants them to fix the USA's immigration and drug problems?  Why?  Because he is to stupid and incapable of getting a law passed to fix them!

I mean, what more of an impossible task can you give them?  "Fix the USA's problem with fentanyl and illegal immigration!  We can't figure it out but two vastly smaller countries should be able to handle it for us!"

So he is basically giving them an impossible task as his "ask" in order to avoid tariffs.  He can always just say, "They didn't do it" and impose the tariffs.  So, why not just put the damn tariffs on like he promised instead of being chicken shit and getting scared?

He is very likely to never impose any tariffs and not really get anything out of the whole tough guy charade.  It will be like the wall Mexico was going to build.  I am sure, though, you will all tell us that the big, beautiful wall from sea to shining sea has really been build.  I am sure you are going to say all this nonsense was really effective and pull some little minor change in the trade deficit or something out of the air to claim supreme victory.

Same Trump ineffectiveness, Same Trumpists, different 4 years.  Anyone who knew anything knew what to expect but the morons decided to do it again!

What executive order, signed literally days ago, is already "backfiring badly"?

Are you trying to tie an executive order to the airplane / helicopter accident?  FAA?    Not sure I follow, or if that is what you are saying, as you are making blanket statements without any explanation.

Regarding, tariffs, and using them as a negotiation technique, I don't know if it will work or not, because it hasn't really played out yet.

Economics -- seems dumb that Europe has a 10% tariff on US manufactured cars, and we have a 2.5% tariff on European manufactured cars.   That's like a taxpayer subsidy to Mercedes, VW, Volvo, BMW, etc.   I don't have a problem equalizing that or using tariff as a negotiation tactic to eliminate all those tariffs.   It's not like Europe is third world and needs to protect their growing industries.

Reducing illegal Immigration / Drugs -- he just used that threat against Columbia.   We'll see how it plays out.   Maybe it is a bad idea like you are saying.   But we'll have to see the numbers in 2 or so years to know.

20 years ago maybe.

All the European car manufacturers are bleeding market share to the Chinese companies. Volkswagen, in particular, is in real deep doo-doo.

Actually, they don't have a pile of money, and they are very concerned about Trump eliminating the tariff imbalance that has subsidized European manufacturing.   They are shuttering factories.

Just watch for him to start throwing Stormy Daniels, Castro, Putin, David Duke, and Crypto Coin into the mix at random to make his point seem plausible.

Throwing out Stormy / Castro / Duke / Crypto is a like a boxer, reaching to their repertoire, and throwing some good jabs, left hooks, and uppercuts.

If only we had an impartial judge / score keeper on this site, that could declare who wins in every debate.

Unfortunately, a message board is like a boxing match that never ends, as there is no referee to declare the winner.

And it is like an untelevised sparring match, that the public never sees, because the arguments here also evaporate into the ether after a day or so, and are forgotten.  It also has no impact on any elections.   Just people trading virtual jabs.    I guess it is good for mental health, as it allows people a venue to interact and vent.
