SJSU is actually the 5th largest CSU campus. The 10 largest CSU campuses by headcount in Fall 2024 are: Fullerton - 42,999 students Long Beach - 41,189 San Diego - 39,373 Northridge - 36,848 San Jose - 33,158 Sacramento - 30,883 Pomona - 27,196 Fresno - 24,310 San Luis Obispo - 22,842 Los Angeles - 22,740 But the key indicator is not who is largest, but are enrollments increasing or decreasing at the individual CSU campus. 10 largest percentage declines in headcount from 2015 to 2024: Sonoma down 39% Humboldt down 31% East Bay down 30% San Francisco down 26% Maritime down 25% Channel Islands down 21% Los Angeles down 18% Chico down 15% Northridge down 11% San Bernardino down 11% Source is table midway in this article: https://edsource.org/2024/enrollment-rises-at-some-cal-state-campuses-falls-at-others/723526 Those student declines are why Sonoma is making big cuts, Humboldt is receiving state money to become a Cal Poly, and Maritime is being administratively consolidated with Cal Poly SLO. Other declining campuses like Channel Islands and San Francisco are scrambling according to media reports. I think CSU is facing some big decisions with some campuses, but can they act quickly enough. I would not be surprised to see administrative or even program consolidations at some campuses following the Maritime consolidation example. Every campus may not need every service or program onsite. 1 Quote

Just a personal take, but I'd save the schools that are actual real college schools that offer something of significance. So not hybrib jucos like Northridge, CSULA, San Berdoo or East Bay and even Fullerton. 1 1 Quote

Many thanks for the info. As I suspected: "An hour north of San Francisco, Sonoma State University celebrates its location on the edge of the Russian River Valley by naming its dorms for wine varietals and regions from Beaujolais to Zinfandel. But wildfires have destroyed thousands of homes in this region of the state since 2017, a shock from which its population and already expensive housing market are still recovering." Sonoma State and CSU Channel Islands are similar in that each is relatively small with a nice campus located in a nice area but those campuses are not convenient to get to. Being in just a middle class neighborhood, SDSU has focused on having its main campus have a village-like atmosphere which has always been the focus of UC campuses despite the much more affluent areas which surround most such campuses. For those who might not be aware, the Maritime Academy is rather bizarre. Particularly odd is merging it with Cal Poly SLO that is not only 250 miles away but which focuses on agriculture and architecture, not seamanship, a subject that was once taught at SJSU closer to Vallejo. 2 Quote

WOW • Thx for such a detailed & informative response. I thought Cal Poly-SLO was larger. I wish I went there right out of HS opposed to SDSU. I got the impression there was a HUGE boom in Cal State campus additions 1990s-2010s. I guess this is the correction. Apparently CSU-San Marcos is thriving. 1 Quote
