FresnoFacts Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Sonoma State is ending its entire D2 athletic program at the end of this current academic year. The University is facing a severe budget crunch. Student enrollments have declined by 38% since 2015. Additionally the California State University systemwide is dealing with budget cuts. Besides the entire athletic program, SSU is cutting 46 faculty positions, eliminating 22 degree programs, closing 6 academic departments, and also cutting management and staff positions. The Sonoma State Seawolves have competed in the D2 California Collegiate Athletic Association since 1998 fielding seven women’s teams (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field and volleyball) and four men’s teams (baseball, basketball, golf and soccer). We are likely to see many other smaller athletic programs have to follow the same path. https://budget.sonoma.edu/sites/budget/files/2025-01/Message from the President 1_22 FINAL (1).pdf https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/sonoma-state-ssu-rohnert-park-cuts/ 6 Quote

Spaztecs Posted January 22 Posted January 22 The first drips will soon become a flood. I saw that Simon Frasier in Canada dropped Football. The played NAIA ball in the Lone Star Conference. Quote
MissionTrails Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Can't blame 'em with all the crap going on in college sports these days. I wouldn't be shocked to see a D-1 team do this at some point. 1 Quote

Athletics may be the only thing keeping the doors open for the whole university. 1 Quote

We didn't have to cut sports like you guys did with wrestling. We're top 4 in enrollment in the CSU and every single program is impacted. So, pair that with our student fees for athletics and we're good. Quote

Keep destroying seats in your venues and putting 16 people in the crowd and we’ll see how long you last. Quote

More are coming in the years ahead, for sure. Quote

That's what successful athletic programs do. 1 Quote

AztecAlien Posted January 22 Posted January 22 It's just unfortunate what's happening to college athletics. There was a time for many colleges across the country when academics were every bit as important as sports for athletes. Now it's about choosing a university that pays the best. Sad. 2 Quote

SleepingGiantFan Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I don't get it. Sonoma State at least used to have a very pretty campus located in a very pretty area although I wonder what the housing expenses are around there. 1 Quote

Agree but at D3, NAIA, or D2 there are Simply fewer kids going to college as birth rates drop and tuition costs increase 3 Quote

It used to be a growing campus with financial support from the area including the wine industry. But enrollments have dropped. I don't think housing is necessarily the big factor. SSU has 3,100 on-campus bed spaces in its dorms for a Fall 2024 enrollment of 5,784 students (some will be local commuters). There should be plenty of on-campus space to provide affordable student housing when combined with local commuter students. 1 Quote
