I see it as extremely difficult for any non power program to field nationally relevant programs in BOTH FB and BB.  Look at the top25 BB rankings.  The only non power schools don't even have FB programs.  Meanwhile the schools that never gave a shit about BB litter the top 25.

In our situations, it's really kind of like one, or the other.  I don't think G schools have much of a shot super-funding both programs like they need to be to win at the highest levels.

To UNLV’s credit the school has done the heavy lifting already in things like facilities which does make a huge difference. Much of what has kept us down for decades was incompetent or disinterested leadership which is also no longer the problem with President Whitfield and AD Harper. Now it’s a matter of money and timing. Football may have finally become self sustaining. So that only leaves money for a real commitment to MBB. That is where timing comes back into play. Everything else is and has been in place for over a decade. So when does money and timing get together?

I won't be going.  I was looking at the calendar and don't anticipate going to more than 2 or 3 more games this year. Definitely UNR and then possibly CSU and/ or SDSU for senior night. Don't think I will be going to the tourney either.  The excitement just isn't there for me this year and the 8pm mid-week start times are dumb as F.

8pm Start time isn't UNLV's fault -- that's on CBS Sports

But back in the day, almost every UNLV game tipped off at 8:05pm & of course the old BIg Monday ESPN was a 9 pm tip

But, yes, the excitement level is about at BORE or SNORE

Sounds exactly like a game UNLV will unexpectedly win lol

And I used to go to all those 9pm games cuz Bayno, for all his faults, at least kept the program exciting and interesting. Plus I was younger and didn't work a "career" job which didn't hurt. Add to that the program was just a few years removed from Tark and had many remaining fans.

I was still excited and engaged during the Spoon, Lon, and Rice years. After Rice nuked the program I was still excited as I never imagined the program would become a MW also-ran at best for a dozen years and counting.  But now it's been so long, the engagement I've long held for 3 decades is finally getting harder to muster.

On a related note, the person running UNLV basketball's social media accounts needs to take notes from the UNLV Hockey team social accounts.

The Hockey team (still club, mind you) has a loud, passionate and growing fan base and the club is kicking ass (ranked #2 nationally and heading back to the ACHA national tournament).

The social media posts have matched the team's swagger and attitude and are downright funny at times.

The basketball posts are about as exciting as picking out what kind of dish soap you're going to use.

If a non-scholarship sport involving ice in the desert can drum up rabid fan support, so too can the once mighty Runnin' Rebels. Just gotta get a little creative and step it up.

The hockey team is selling out every game now, as well. Granted, the venue isn't huge, but they've got a following..

Our old friend Ricegreen has been theorizing he thinks Junior will come back next year because we haven't heard a peep from the local media yet about him being on the hot seat which is a bit strange considering this horrible season and our 4 game losing streak.

He is saying he thinks they will blame this season on injuries and let Junior run it back another year.

Gulp.

I can see his point, previous coaches who were in the midst of seasons better than this one had already by this point in the season had articles questioning their job security.

So much $$ in this city, you'd think Harper would be able to find enough to cut Junior loose and hire a competent coach!!

UNLV hockey is pushing for D-1 promotion. I think it could happen in the next 3-4 years.

I'd probably spend more time watching college hockey than basketball from that point on.

Utah was good in both, also Cincinnati, UCF has done well.

Plus I did not say nationally relevant, although it is possible. I said better than UNLV in both. Which is a longer list.

Pasternak makes 500k at ucsb. I think UNLV can get more bang for its 800k without increasing anything. Increasing just widens the pool of candidates.

Also, McCollum at Drake (20-2) is only making $275K. I think he'll probably be one of the hottest coaches moving up though, I did a little reading up on him. But there are certainly a lot of options, we don't need anyone that has to learn on the job.

I went to a few of their games at the Orleans.  Now they play in the VGK practice rink which probably only seats 1k tops. They should at least move over to Lee's Family Forum, can share the ice with HSK and will have much bigger capacity.

And it's gaining traction. I'd love to see it.

Just another example that Las Vegas will support college sport when they are winning. There is a market around these sports because they are a more realistic price point for the average family.

I don’t think that Harper feels the need to play out a soap opera in the media the way that previous AD’s were compelled to do. He is a much more professional and confident person.

Man those days were fun.. I remember when Bogut was at Utah and it seemed like we had a few Big Monday games against them

Majerus would lose his cool, Bogut would destroy the Rebels and I'd be loaded by tip off

I used to love those late night Big Monday games on ESPN. Jimmy Dykes would call a lot of those games and he was always complimentary of UNLV and the conference.

I was in high school then but my parents were cool with those late nights since it was the Rebels.

The MWC was brand new at the time and Charlie Spoonhour's Rebels would get a lot of air time. Marcus Banks was our feature guy back then, but some of the other teams in the conference were just too big or too balanced for him to do it alone.

I recall a wicked OT game against UNM (Reuben Douglas?) that didn't end until well after midnight.

He closed fist punched the guy. I know I was drunk as a skunk and def yelled some shit I'm def not proud of at the refs and Raf
