He's not a bad guy, or at least didn't used to be.  I used to hang out with him a lot way back in the day (mid 90-s to early 2000's) and we went on a lot of basketball road trips back when I was an undergrad student and way more hard-core fan than I am now... (UNR where we almost got beat up by the football team after the game, SDSU where we saw and chatted with a possibly coked out Bayno on his way to the clubs after the game, LMU, New Mexico, etc).

We also made several road trips to St. George to watch UNLV recruit Marcus Banks play at what was then Dixie State Jr College (now Utah Tech of the WAC). I was at the table at a Denny's in St. George with Marcus and Spilotro when he signed his LOI to UNLV.  Last time I saw Spilotro in person was at Lon Krugers last game, the NCAA blowout loss in Tulsa. He was not remotely pleased and was among those who wanted Lon out.... big mistake there.

He famously went something like over 30 years without missing a single home UNLV basketball game and prided himself on fierce loyalty. Unfortunately him and the other hard core Rebel Netters got tucked into the Dave Rice Hive Mind cult, he helped foster it. I know we just recently had a thread on that topic but that's when I bolted from there.  I know he and his minions consider their continued worshipping of the guy who set this current state of UNLV affairs in motion as loyalty, but sheesh.

Reciting UNLV hoops stories from the good Ole days makes me wish Earnie Baer was still around!!!

He is certainly not an evaluator of talent. I sat by him at an AAU tournament game in Las Vegas about 10 years ago, I had gone to check out a kid at Gorman that Dave Rice was recruiting. About 7 feet tall, very lerpy, and Joe was gushing about how great he was, and said he 'ran the court like a gazelle'. He lost any credibility he had that day, cause the kid was all knees and elbows, ended up playing at a small school like Robert Morris, or something like that. I kinda felt for the kid because after that tournament he said he'd be committing to be a rebel the next day, and then it just went away. I don't think Dave actually offered him.

Ernie is still on twitter, I see him post there occasionally. I told him about this board, but I don't think he made his way here.

That actually happens all the time. It's not unique to UNLV.

I'm not on Twitter or x or whatever it's called, but give Ernie my regards. He is my favorite poster ever!!!

I'm old enough to know that UNLV should be in the top 25 every year. At the least. NCAA 7 out of 10 years.

There is no excuse. You have all of the advantages, nice weather, top notch facilities and marketing, a national brand, team usa, summer league, nba alums, sweet 16s, final fours and a natty.

There is nothing to add to that list.

Nothing can convince that great players won't come to UNLV and be led, not try to take over.

Just need a good coach who can recruit, and good staff.

I'd say the UNLV program is currently one of the most underachieving in the entire country and has been for awhile.  We are not in a major conference with big TV income. However all the other advantages you mentioned should give us a HUGE advantage over most other schools in the western US.  Even fans of our MW rivals openly admit it. It's really a disgrace what the program has turned into and should not be acceptable.

The Rebel-net guy (Joe?) talking sh*t on twitter to Rishwain’s family, about…Rishwain. Such class. Said he had cement shoes, and couldn't play defense..stopped just short of blaming the loss yesterday on him. And he’s justifying it since they get paid and they’re over 18 and they are big boys now and deserve it. Also that since there’s no loyalty from players now that they can be nasty to them.

I can’t even imagine doing that to any player’s family.

ok, rant over.

It's him.  Not much nice to say.  Doesn't surprise me.

What surprised me was that he outright rude to the guy. I called him out on it and he said the guy came at him, (he didn’t) and that it’s fair game now that they’re getting paid, and aren’t loyal anymore.

I checked out his x account and he's still tweeting about Dave Rice in between all the anti-covid vax rants.  Kinda scary since I believe he works in the health care industry.  Weird guy.

Pat Kelsey has Louisville in the top 25.  They were 185 in KenPom last year.  Yes, it’s Louisville, but they were a dumpster fire.

Ya’ll didn’t want him for whatever reason.

Maybe UCLA will fire Cronin. I would love Cronin in Vegas.

I was glad we dodged that bullet the last time..

Hey, Cronin would be better than the duds we've had the last 15 years, which isn't saying much. But yeah he played us big time a few years ago although I don't blame him for it, he was really playing the incompetent AD.  And former UCLA coaches aren't guaranteed to do awesome if they join a MW school (see: Steve Alford at UNR).  I'd just be glad we got an actual real coach for once if it happened.

He infects RebelNet with all that anti-vax bullshit as well, it nauseating.  He was also the band leader for the Ricetard crowd on killing the FB program and just going to play in the WCC.   Brilliant mind, indeed.

Personally I don't want Mick Cronin, Steve Alford, Richard Pitino, or anyone else of that type. They're kind of all the same to me, mediocre at best. Yes, they'd be better than what we've had lately, but I still don't want them. I think with the football hires that have been made, Harper can do a better job at finding a really good coach. I do think we need to be throwing some $ HIS way, I'd hate to lose him at this point.

I've never understood why it's so incredibly hard or impossible for some people to just admit they're wrong sometimes, especially when it becomes clear as day. Everyone makes mistakes, nobody is perfect, super easy for me to admit when I was dead wrong. But some people just can't do it for whatever reason.

The fact that Rice didn't do diddly squat in the dozen years since he nuked the UNLV program and has kept stumbling downwards all the way to the freaking community college level, and they still talk him up like he could and would have, without any doubt, been the best ever if, gee golly, he was just given more of a chance, it just makes them all look even dumber tbh.

He'll, even ph, one a Rice worshipper above all else, finally got off that train.

Yeah I remember that talk about killing the football program. LMAO!!!

I wouldn't want that ilk either but at this point beggars can't be choosers, and make no mistake, UNLV is well within that "beggars" classification.

I admit when I was on Reb-Net I was drinking the CDR Kool Aid too.  Golf course Lon was doing OK, but along with everybody else, I got greedy and wanted more of the Findlay Prep blue-chip type recruits to take the program to the next level.  CDR brought the recruits but I realized after about year 4 that he didn't have the charisma or experience to get those horses to produce.  I guess I'm a slow learner.

That’s what we thought with football, though. I don’t think it has to be that way.  But that’s just me.

I have seen a few recent posts from a couple Rebelnetters on Twitter that think Rice should come back, now that he has head coaching experience. I’m slapping my head at that lol.

All AD EH has to do is follow his football blue print.

Barry Odom is a good, solid name, with a very solid resume.

UNLV has not had that sense Lon.
