Droga Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Let's wait and see how the year unfolds. Two very good wins this week but these two wins followed to very poor losses. I am still in the boat of make it to the NCAA tourney or pack your bags. This year dont matter if they make it into the nit because 50 other teams declinded an invite. If Kevin wants to stay around have him prove it with his team. Keep winning and make it to the dance. 2 1 Quote

At least we didn’t give him a 10 year contract, lol. 1 1 Quote
Quickdraw Posted January 20 Posted January 20 So buyout: $800,000 Additional for quality new coach: $1,000,000 (total $1.8mm minimum per yr for a quality proven coach) Additional for quality assistants: $400,000 Total additional year 1: $2,200,000 Additional years 2-5: $1,400,000 * 4 years Total 5 year additional: $7,800,000 So everything should go as planned as soon as the AD comes up with an additional commitment of almost $8mm. That is the additional commitment. That would put our new head coach in line with what CSU is paying Medved which is 2nd the conference. Dutcher is making around $2.5mm this year for reference. We also just doubled our football coach’s contract and probably a tad more for assistants. That is the reality that Harper and Whitfield are dealing with. Just sayin… https://www.coloradoan.com/story/sports/csu/mens-basketball/2024/04/15/niko-medved-contract-where-colorado-state-basketball-coach-salary-ranks-mountain-west/73331829007/ Quote

Hire a real coach that can bring some excitement back to the Mack by winning games. Basketball built UNLV as we know it, because we weren’t afraid to go out and hire a coach with an exciting brand of basketball. That built a bunch of buildings on the UNLV campus. We’ve seen what hiring assistants has gotten us…an empty Mack. I occasionally see someone on here saying we need to tear down the Mack and build a smaller arena…no, that’s ridiculous. How about we try hiring a coach, start winning games, even in non con, and see what happens. 4 Quote

How about we try hiring a coach, start winning games, even in non con, and see what happens. I was just stating a fact and not choosing a side. The point is, just like in football, that when a change is made we need to do so by hiring a real proven head coach with experience at a higher level and also with success at a higher level. Just like football MBB has tried every strategy possible when it’s come to HC decisions. Assistants with zero HC experience… twice. HC with lower level experience…twice. HC with one foot out the door towards retirement or a better job… twice. HC with experience and success at a higher level… Lon Kruger, the only one with a modicum of real success. That is just the last 15 years or so. When a change is made we need to go all in on a head coach with experience and success at a higher level who KNOWS how to do it on day one just like we have all seen and agreed with in football. That is a pricey option. Money doesn’t just materialize out of thin air. Nobody here or on the internet is coming up with 5 to 10 million. Talk is cheap. Yes it takes money to make money but in the real world you still need to have that money in hand to make that business decision. Change for change sake has not worked no matter how many times that we have tried it. Lon showed us that in the real world it took 4 to 5 years to start to get a real world ROI (sell tickets). All of the pie in the sky hoping, wishing and bitching won’t change that no matter what social media wants to say. Right now we are all in on football and rightfully so. Much more opportunity for a higher ROI. In the real world money needs to be in hand or loans in place before capital expansion can take place. Talk is cheap and real information on the financial state of what UNLV is prepared to commit to MBB is short on facts. So at what point is UNLV prepared to make an ADDITIONAL 5 to 10 million dollar commitment to change the direction to the MBB program. Inquiring minds want to know.. Quote
crsmitty04 Posted January 20 Posted January 20 I've advocated for keeping Kruger at least 4-5 years and tearing down the Mack for a smaller arena. I still hold both opinions (although Kruger will need to make the tournament this year or I'll be convinced it's time for him to move on). As for the Mack, I'm sick of seeing it as a ghost town and I don't think it'll ever be consistently full again (even with a hotshot coach). The changes to college basketball mean too much roster turnover year to year. I don't think you can get 18k to consistently fall in love with a cast of new characters every year. But I do think you could get 8-10k to do so. And if that's all the building holds, it'd make for a loud and intimidating environment for visiting teams. Just look at Duke, Gonzaga, SDSU, Butler, etc. Great programs with small to medium gyms with elite atmospheres on GameDay. UNLV could have that again, but it needs to be realistic about how many butts in seats it can consistently get. 2 Quote

Other shows and events? Multiples of what MBB does or even has for decades. How much to raze the T&M and build a new arena? How many years to recoup that investment? If we are talking best ROI, that makes zero sense. Message board management doesn’t pay the bills. We’ve all complained for years that the AD should be run as a business. 2 Quote

If Harp decides to make a change, he needs to get the money lined up first to get a proven winner at the highest levels, like he did for FB. Otherwise, we're just going to get more of the same. No more on the job training or hiring coaches with one foot out the door on the cheap. 4 Quote
Quickdraw Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Ten Days Of National Finals Rodeo In Las Vegas Draws More Than 170,000 In Attendance At Thomas & Mack Center NFR has sold out 369 consecutive performances at Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. I believe that we just signed a new 10 year contract with NFR. That is called guaranteed revenue. https://lvsportsbiz.com/2024/12/15/ten-days-of-national-finals-rodeo-in-las-vegas-draws-more-than-170000-in-attendance-at-thomas-mack-center/ 3 Quote

My opinion is more of a hope/wish scenario for how to improve UNLV's basketball atmosphere (irregardless of UNLV's financial capabilities). UNLV may be due a windfall soon from the PAC fees but those funds seem pre-allocated for debt and football. Honestly, considering the cost of coaches, facilities, travel, equipment and now NIL funds, I don't see how college sports (as currently constructed) remains tenable. The AD revenue, sponsorship dollars and donors only have so much to give, and now they're being asked to give a lot more. I think a widespread athletics scale down is likely to occur for many schools. 3 Quote

T&M is WAY too big for a crowd that will never return. Also, UNLV Marketing team needs to get off their lazy asses and go to other premium games around the nation and see what they do to make a winning atmosphere. Was at the Dayton game - night and day difference in crowd engagement. 1 Quote

So spend what, $50 to $100 million to build a 10,000 seat arena for 20 basketball games? After that the arena would need to compete with 10 to 15 other similar facilities around Vegas for other business. Yeah, that makes total sense. Once again, SHOW ME THE MONEY! Who really thinks that this is the lone issue holding back Rebel Basketball.? Those same people never go to games now so they are part of the problem in the first place. Gotta love sports message boards and social media where everyone know how to best spend other people’s money and never put up 2 cents of their own. 5 Quote
