thehowlin Posted January 16 Posted January 16 The U.S. Government’s ban on TikTok is poised to take effect this Sunday, January 19th, unless the SCOTUS intervenes. Congress passed the ban because “TikTok is a national security threat being that the Chinese Communist Party could, among other things, use it to influence American public opinion. Also, data security.” So, what are the 170 million Americans who use TikTok on a daily basis doing? Downloading and signing up for Red Note, the Chinese version of TikTok that is LITERALLY owned by the Chinese Communist Party. Quote

Just like warning labels on alcohol and cigarettes, some people are just going to do dumb things. Quote

CV147 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 A huge overreach in government power. I am opposed to the ban. I think all governments should be allowed to spy on me equally, not just the U.S. government. lol 1 Quote

tailingpermit Posted January 17 Posted January 17 It’s in Trump’s hands, Tik Tok head brass will be front and center at the inauguration - Biden isn’t going after fines. It’s massive waste of time, leave Tik Tok alone. Quote

Court says the ban is constitutional?) Quote

From the news clip I saw Biden can tell the AG to pause fines incurred during his last day of office, then Trump can sign an executive order pausing the ban until a deal is reached. Quote

Truth Social gets to own it and American citizens will pay for it? I don’t see Trump allowing a competitor in the media sphere (especially one from China) to continue existing if he doesn’t have to. It’s better for Trump, Elon, and Zuckerberg if it dies. 1 Quote

It starts with the parents. Unfortunately, there's a lot of parents addicted to it as well. It really is drugs. Hooked on phones. Quote

Are you saying parents or even the government shouldn’t step in and take control of what children are watching and reading? Or are you mocking the First Amendment of the Constitution? Quote

I have two kids in elementary and neither are interested in any form of social media. Nor are their friends. Bill of rights is entirely a joke to the supreme court. 3rd amendment is all we’ve got left. Quote

I don't have social media aside from this board. Not sure I'd really even call an anonymous message board social media since all other hallmarks of social media require you to not be anonymous. Maybe it's a gray area... IDK... But I won't let my kids access social media. Ideally I'd like my wife to get off facebook as I see how it affects here in terms of mood, attention span, and time management. She will tune out the whole family for hours while she's scrolling which isn't healthy, but I know she's doing it to destress from work. I'm a firm believer that society as a whole would be better off without social media. I don't know if it's the governments place to implement the ban, unless they can prove it's a national security risk. But I'm doing my part and voting with my lack of participation. 2 Quote
