Just_Chris Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 After checking out some of the places mentioned in this thread I really feel like New Mexico has some real underrated places to check out. I never really gave White Sands much thought but it really seems unique and worth visiting. It's really not that far from ABQ or El Paso but I don't know how much those are on the average tourist's radar. El Paso another place I've never been and never really gave much thought to. I don't even know what's there. On the way to Phoenix I told him to detour to Tombstone, I have been there and I liked it but I like the idea of the Old West. I was always a fan of Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Rifleman and of course Bonanza. The Billy the Kid stuff always fascinated me as well. 1 Quote

Lots of old west type places but still a significant influence of the colonial Spanish. I'd highly recommend taking alternate routes to I-25, and you get to see a lot of hidden gems. I only scratched the surface in the 6 months I lived there. Quote

I've been all over this country and in my opinion New Mexico along with Utah are two of the most underrated states in the country. 2 Quote

I love Utah... every time we come back home we take a trip to this small little art village near St George called Kayenta for lunch. I really like Heber City as well, the lake is cool and Park City is awesome although we don't stay in Park. We stay in the outskirts near 80. Quote

So I guess he's flying to Phoenix and gonna drive to the GC, then come through 40 and stay in ABQ and head to Santa Fe. I guess he was originally going to stay in Roswell but decided to stay in Las Cruces after he goes to White Sands and then drive back to Phoenix. He is going to skip Carlsbad because he said he doesn't have the time to give it the time it deserves. Don't know if it is too late but he should check out the Gila Cliff Dwellings. 1 Quote

New Mexico is beautiful. Culturally different. I was born there, spent much time there, and it still perplexes me. Quote

It is just that special especially if you have the chance to stay overnight with a backcountry permit. Chaco Canyon is another place you might want to add to your itinerary. Has been some time since I was there, but I guess it's still accessible via dirt road only, but definitely worth it. 1 Quote
AztecAlien Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I really like New Mexico. I've driven through the northern and southern parts of the state. The topography is amazing. Wish I could have hit the Carlsbad Caverns when I had the chance. Is that worth it? I really didn't think much of Roswell. Kinda boring and touristy in my opinion. Thinking about taking a roadie in the future during the fall months sometime to see some of the places I missed. I also really like saying Tucumcari New Mexico for some reason. 1 Quote

Managed to do it in a Sedan in the rain, but it was harrowing. 1 Quote

Carlsbad Caverns is a bucket list must for sure. You gotta see it. The museum in Alamagordo is legit too as the aforementioned Gila Cliff Dwellings. The Gila are like Mesa Verde without the tourists. You can still get up close and personal with the dwellings and they are pretty spectacular. 1 Quote

Yellowstone can be fantastic after the first snowfall. You almost have the place to yourself. 2 Quote
StealthLobo Posted January 23 Posted January 23 We went to some pretty nice hot springs in T or C last summer. They were really nice and so cheap, if you are passing through a recommend a stop there for a night. 1 Quote

I told him I didn't know but could ask some people who might. I guess he said it's on the way to Carlsbad from Northern NM but he said outside of the museum he wanted to know what was there. Can you see the actual "UFO" that supposedly crashed? I told him he should just go to Hatch and eat peppers instead but he insisted on finding out. My only experience with New Mexico is driving through on 40 and checking in to a motel in Gallup on a Friday night and being told to order a pizza and avoid the bars by the guy at the front desk. I listened. Did you stay in the hotel in Gallup where each room has a movie star's name on the door? That's because Gallup is the location where Hollywood shot a lot of Western movies. Quote

It was close to 30 years ago so it's been a while Quote
Supersix Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I was at 7-Eleven asking where the bags of ice were when three New Mexicans ran out the door. 1 Quote
