Just_Chris Posted January 14 Posted January 14 So a friend of mine is going to do the whole southwest thing, Sedona, Grand Canyon, 4 corners, Breaking Bad (no idea what that means), Albuquerque, Carlsbad and White Sands and he asked me if Roswell is worth the detour from ABQ to White Sands. I told him I didn't know but could ask some people who might. I guess he said it's on the way to Carlsbad from Northern NM but he said outside of the museum he wanted to know what was there. Can you see the actual "UFO" that supposedly crashed? I told him he should just go to Hatch and eat peppers instead but he insisted on finding out. My only experience with New Mexico is driving through on 40 and checking in to a motel in Gallup on a Friday night and being told to order a pizza and avoid the bars by the guy at the front desk. I listened. Quote

Gallup is cool. 86 octane gas, incredibly poor street signage, mexican food that doesn't taste like any mexican food I've ever had but isn't americanized cheese infused mexican food either, and tastes pretty good (not as good as Baja CA mexican food though). I've been through there a half dozen times on my way to Little Rock from CA and back, I love it. Actually I love New Mexico in general. Unique place, nothing like any other place I've ever been to with the buttes and mesas and all that. It's beautiful. Never been to south new mexico though. 1 Quote
modestobulldog Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I’m jealous, I love road trips. Did the Carlsbad and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell with my wife, mother and father in law. It was before we had a smartphone and were using Verizon navigation on a flip phone. When we came into Roswell, we were hungry and navigated to Whataburger, about a mile past the UFO Museum. As we passed the UFO Museum, it told us to immediately turn left, then a block another left, then another left across the Main Street a block, then left again. Bailed out of navigation and went manual to Whataburger. It was nuts. The aliens probably planted a magnetrometer of something, LOL. Be sure to swami a tin foil hat, the museum is a hoot. My mother in law believes in UFO’s, listened to George Noory. Went to a T-shirt shop close by, the owners played along. He told us the Quonset hut where the UFO remains were housed is still standing at airport/ former Air Force Base. It is a few miles out of town, might as well do that too. 1 Quote

If he’s going to White Sands (from ABQ) he should cut through Alamogordo to Cloudcroft…from there can cut through Ruidoso to the north or straight east but then has to backtrack north to Roswell…so I’d do Ruidoso and Lincoln county to Roswell. The museum is a one time said you do it kind of thing. I’m not going to hype it up. Roswell through Artesia to get to Carlsbad….the caverns alone are worth the drive through the area. Adobe Rose is a little surprise outside Artesia. Solid eats and drinks. If he does Cloudcroft to Roswell would time that during the daytime. Great scenery. 2 Quote

Almagordo is one of my favorite towns, definitely worth the drive, especially if you go through the Carrizozo Volcanic field. I also really liked Magdalena on the west side, and San Antonio had the best hole in the wall mexican food. Can't remember the name of it. The buckhorn bar wasn't worth it though. Quote

Been awhile since I’ve cut through there. I typically go south via the east side of the Manzanos…takes a little longer but more peaceful. Quote

I just remember drinking more than the tech needs in socorro. Quote

My favorite history is the ranchers and scientists carried the entire bar out of the building as it was on fire. If I could travel back in time to drink with that group…great mix. 2 Quote

So I guess he's flying to Phoenix and gonna drive to the GC, then come through 40 and stay in ABQ and head to Santa Fe. I guess he was originally going to stay in Roswell but decided to stay in Las Cruces after he goes to White Sands and then drive back to Phoenix. He is going to skip Carlsbad because he said he doesn't have the time to give it the time it deserves. Quote
