AztecAlien Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Little to no rain and early Santa Ana winds in January are a recipe for disaster. I been reading about this, but haven't seen anything regarding authorities stating if they have any information how they think this may have been started.

We're getting Sept/Oct weather in January. This is typically the middle of the rainy season which runs from Nov- Mar/Apr. We know it wasn't lightning that started it. These events are 90%+ man-caused, intentional or unintentional. 3

Yeah, you get them in February as well. How is it in SD? My folks are in El Cajon. Granite Hills area.

However, I am in between the 3-major ones: Palisades (10-mi to my West) Eaton (20-mi to my East) Hurst Fires (20-mi to my North) Best of luck @InnZoneU! 1

I'm on the coast. It's a little windy and that's about it. My neighbor's palm tree is dropping little palm tree turds on my driveway. 1
The San Diegan Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Forecasted 80-100 mph (!!) gusts is just batshit insane. We had a 110 mph gust here during the Witch Creek Fire in '07. The increased wind velocity (a result of climate change) is a primary driver for the intense spread of wildfires in SoCal and has been for over 20 years. 2
azgreg Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I'm reading some bitching about no water from the fire hydrants.

Heading out to help a lady I know who runs a horse and senior dog rescue in Kagel Canyon area off the 210. It's not quite there yet, but moving that way. She already got the horses to the rescue center in Burbank. 1 1
MrBug708 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 My parents live a few miles south of Eaton Canyon. They know of at least one person who lost their house. A few more the status is unknown. I work at a school just a mile further from my parents and we were closed because of power concerns. As of this morning, JP Morgan estimated 10B in lost property and that was when the fires were much smaller. This is going to be closer to scale of the Northridge quake. Maybe not the same loss of life as the Paradise fire, but going to be more devastating IMO.

Southern California Edison has shut off much of the grid to prevent downed power lines from starting new fires. No power = no pump stations = dry hydrants (eventually).

You could add urban sprawl to a portion of your argument and a good percentage of why wildfires become so destructive. JMTC.

It was developed in the 1920s. Good luck halting development of the coast of the nation’s most populous county. 1
