Mostly agree but I think the light is an oncoming train.  Until we hit critical mass in anything, humans will do jack shit proactively….and in America that behavior is on steroids.  We can’t be inconvenienced.

And some people on this board think civil war is a real possibility.  Lol

Haven't read through the thread but am somewhat familiar with the issue and as someone who has brought over s/w engineers on H1Bs and knows more than a few people living and working here on an H1B, thought I might chime in.

The simple fact is we don't graduate enough s/w engineers/CS majors to meet industry demand; we need H1B workers to fill these jobs we cannot fill domestically due to the fact we have cultivated a lifestyle that allows our children the luxury of choosing to become art history majors.

As much as I deplore the idea of a nascent oligarchy supplanting the greatest experiment in free democracy since Ancient Greece, Ramaswamy and Musk are (at least partially) right in their protestations - this is indeed a cultural issue. We have become intellectually lazy as a people, as we have failed to curate the value of learning and/or an education. By contrast, until this most recent generation, every kid in India could grow up to become whatever they wanted, so long as that career was either a doctor or engineer.

So yes - we have systemic issues in this country that need to be addressed, and until we do, so long as there is continued demand in SV for highly-skilled tech workers, we will need to use H1B visas as a stopgap to meet demand.

However... what I don't hear from Elmo is the understanding or recognition that this should be a temporary solution until we can, and have, roadmaps that provide pathways for more Americans to learn to code. When I see all these small brick-and-mortar coding academies, I feel like I am seeing a little light at the end of the tunnel.

And Elmo and his billionaire buddies are in the unique position to help define policy to make that a reality. Which would be a better choice than getting into online flame wars with the MAGA rank and file.

I think a big problem in the U.S. is less a function of too many “art history/lesbian dance/underwater basket weaving/whatever meme major people use now” majors and instead is too many business majors.

I don’t think civil war is ever off the docket when humans are involved.

I agree about the foreign coders. Most do just fine following specs but are usually lost when having to do much in the way of analysis. Because they’re not taught to do so. Eventually they’ll catch up…but I’ll be retired by then.

You have to be damn good at writing specs/requirements because you can't give any room for error. If you fucked up the instructions, they'll code directly to those instructions. We have a talented guy in India that my team works with. He's worked with our CTO at a couple of jobs over the last like 20 years, and he even messes up if something isn't explicitly defined. That's part of why I'm actually building the prototype for my new product myself, and then I'll hand it over to his team once I get to MVP stage and can explicitly define reqs for each dev sprint for new features.

Elon talks a big game about free speech, but he’s quick to side with globalists when it suits him. Let’s not forget the H1B visa system that these tech billionaires love so much. They use it to bring in cheap labor while hardworking Americans get sidelined.

Trump was the only one who tried to reform that mess. He stood up and said, “American jobs for American workers.” That’s what it’s about. But here’s Elon, all about "innovation," while importing workers who’ll take less pay and displace our people. It’s a slap in the face to every American trying to make an honest living.

If these elites think they can silence us and keep rigging the system, they’ve got another thing coming. MAGA isn’t just a slogan, it’s a movement to put Americans first. Immigration reform needs to start with fixing the H1B scam, and I don’t care how "innovative" someone claims to be if they’re not on board with that.

I don’t know who the fuck that is, but GPT is comedy gold!

My take is the H1Bs are hard working, even harder than home grown.  Costs corporations less…better bottom line so share holders and owners make more money.  Capitalism baby….mer’ca.

Despite NorCal’s (😎) fixation on screaming lesbians to refute his leftist brethren, this shit is going to be fire the next 12 years.  Orange is going flamethrower a whole lot of believers and I just stocked up on popcorn.

GPT is what this board needed with all the volatility.

Particularly when they are already armed and have a documented history.  But thankfully it is still a single digit probability even though 40% of Americans think it is likely or very likely.   We pretty much don’t like each other these days.

The threat for India is that capability can be taken over by AI and done faster and cheaper.

This breakup is going to be superb.  These two fucking dorks are going to wind up in a dyck measuring contest.

It's going to be fascinating to see who breaks up and how.  Does Trump break up with his MAGA cult to court the favor of the world's richest man?  Do Elon and Trump break up over policy differences, or not being able to share the spotlight?

These 4 years won't be boring...

To clarify an earlier post of mine, I think some of the common concentrations of a business degree are useful. Accounting is a perfect example of this, I think that is a great thing to major in.

But that is not all or even most of business majors. A huge chunk of business majors have concentrations in stuff like “management” or “administration”. And yea, I think those business concentrations are absolutely fuckin useless. IMO it would be about as useful a generic major in “government bureaucrat”; or in other words, not very useful. Now I’m not saying those jobs themselves aren’t necessary, just saying that I don’t think you need to complete a damn college program specifically tailored to those jobs to do them well.

And even then, I don’t even have a problem with generic business degree programs existing. My issue is that, unlike the meme majors, students ACTUALLY major in business with useless concentrations in LARGE numbers. So it’s a little funny that people that are so critical of “useless majors” get their panties in a wad over a bunch of shit hardly anybody majors in, but those same folks don’t say anything about the useless majors that people actually DO major in.

It’s almost as if they don’t actually care whether a major is “useful” and instead it is the subject matter of the major that offends them.
