Sactowndog Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Jeez what is it with this generation of leaders. Clearly we have entered the authoritarian age. His use of the Army to shut down parliament highlights the importance of our SecDef confirmation. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/03/asia/south-korea-martial-law-intl/index.html
FresnoFacts Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 South Korea has a more recent history of authoritarian leaders. The June Uprising that brought in the current republic was in 1987, only a generation or so ago. They do not have a long current history as a republic. But yes, President Yoon has been called by some as the "Korean version of Trump" or 한국판 트럼프 due to his policies and behavior. I need to reach out to several friends who are South Korean immigrants to the US to find out what they are hearing from their families still in that country.
SalinasSpartan Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 South Korea’s President is channeling his inner Syngman Rhee I guess.

Hey stalker, why would you even care about that after I agreed with the statement and sympathized with both the South and North Korean people? And that said statement is in the article. Thank goodness this one survived. But the army could have chosen differently. 1

I'm assuming South Korea is a safe democracy, yeah. Yoon has no power. His military obeyed orders in mobilizing but let parliament walk right on through for the vote. Yoon is GONE! He will now be ousted in the month. Now do this with Ukraine...and Zelensky actually canceling elections, imprisoning journalists, using corruption laws to target his adversaries....etc.....

And you are wrong they let Parliment right through. Members of Parliment scaled fences etc. But Yoon’s mistake was a too clearly illegal law. Trump won’t likely do that. https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2024/12/what-game-theory-says-about-maga-military/401404/ 1
