UNLV basketball 'out-toughed' by No. 25 Mississippi State

UNLV coach Kevin Kruger was definitive when asked what made the difference in the 22-point loss.

“Offensive rebounds,” Kruger said. “We couldn’t secure enough of them.”

Jalen Hill led UNLV with five rebounds, and the senior forward agreed with his coach’s assessment.

“They out-rebounded us,” Hill said. “They out-toughed us. Every loose ball was theirs. I think that was the major key, and they won that battle.”

UNLV’s rebounding issues were exacerbated by the early exit of Jeremiah “Bear” Cherry. The junior center left the game with a back injury early in the second half and did not return. Kruger said UNLV will have to “figure it out” if Cherry is unable to play on Friday.

Regardless of who is on the court for that game, Hill wants his team to be exponentially more physical when fighting for rebounds.

“We’ve got to know when the shot goes up, we’ve got to go hit,” Hill said.

We’re playing harder but can’t seem to keep from tripping ourselves up it seems. Giving up loose balls and rebounds for second chance points.. blowing rebounds on missed FT attempts.

First look at your team.

Bigs have a chance to be good but are not playing with instinct.

Defense will need to step up the effort.

NW's guards can be exploited but you're not challenging them.

Same old horrible perimeter defense plus DJ playing hero ball. Kevin should of never taken the job. Should be coaching NAU. Now he will be a lifetime assistant starting next year.

0-3 in our chances for resume-enhancing wins in the OOC. Two more chances left at Creighton and Dayton and we probably get run out of the gym in both of those contests.

Which one of Lon's friends is going to hire Kevin next year? My bet is Altman at Oregon.

I could totally see Kevin Kruger saving face and leaving for an assistant job.

And then UNLVRebelGrl will blame the fans.

This isn’t rocket science.  Hire a real fucking coach!

As bad as we’ve been for the last decade and still ‘UNLV is the best brand in the MW’.

Yet here we are. 😳

If this was last years team maybe. This team is much worse. They will have to win 4 games.

He should still be fired anyways.

That's not saying much. The new MW is on par with titan conferences like the Big Sky and Summit League.
