Will the conference champion of the AAC take away the Big-12’s champions spot as one of the 5 highest ranked conference champions? Looks like Tulane may have a chance.

As it stands now 1. Oregon, 2. Texas, 3. Miami 4. Boise St. 5. Arizona St (14) get an automatic bid. Tulane is setting at #18 and BYU at #19.  If Arizona St losses in their conference championship then they will fall below Tulane.

“The new 12-team College Football Playoff field will include the five highest-ranked conference champions, which will receive automatic bids. The seven highest-ranked teams remaining will round out the 12-team format.”

Tulane may be too high for UNLV to pass even with a win vs Boise. Sucks.

Tulane got Memphis at home next. They both got the same overall record. Memphis beat Florida State while Tulane have not a game against P4 team. Tulane is on a 7 or 8 games win streak, though. If they beat Memphis, Tulane still need to play Army in the AAC championship game.

Tulane's remaining schedule is against unranked opponents - a good Memphis team (currently #52 in the Massey ratings) and #32 Army.  Both of those opponents have the potential to beat Tulane, but they probably won't get a lot of credit for winning either game.

I think at least two of the teams tied at the top of the Big 12 right now (ASU, ISU, BYU, Colorado) will win their final regular-season game.  If so, then the champion will have two more wins than they have right now - their final regular season game plus the championship game.

If that ends up being Iowa State, then they will have added two more wins against current CFP top 25 teams (K-State and their Big 12 title game opponent).  That, added to the fact that they're already ranked ahead of Tulane, would lead me to think they easily stay ahead and get one of the five automatic bids.

If it ends up being ASU, then they will add one more win against a top 25 opponent in the title game, they are already ranked ahead of Tulane, and, like the Iowa State example above, they beat the Kansas State team that beat Tulane.  They would likely get the auto bid over Tulane.

If BYU ends up winning the championship, they would add another top 25 win in the title game.  They are currently ranked behind Tulane, though, in spite of the fact that they have two more wins against ranked opponents than Tulane does, including against the Kansas State team that beat Tulane.  Both teams have one loss to a ranked opponent and one loss to an unranked opponent.  Additionally, BYU's strength of schedule (39 per ESPN's FPI) and strength of record (13 per FPI) is much better than Tulane's (100 and 28, respectively) and should improve even more if they win the Big 12.  I'd like to believe that BYU would get the nod over Tulane in that case, but there's definitely no guarantee.

If Colorado ends up the champion, they have a drag on their schedule this week (Oklahoma State) but would then get a win against a CFP top-25 team in the title game.  Unfortunately for them, they lost to Kansas State.  Like Tulane, they don't have any wins against ranked opponents right now and they have a loss to both a ranked opponent and two unranked opponents.  Further, while their strength of schedule (61) is a fair amount better than Tulane's, their strength of record (26) is only slightly better.  Can definitely see the committee ranking an AAC champion Tulane over a Big 12 champion Colorado.

If anyone else from the Big 12 ends up winning, then Tulane has a really good chance to nab one of the automatic bids if they beat Memphis and win the AAC.

glad we could help out...back-to-back 10 win seasons for my Tigers. That's a first for Memphis.
