If one thing has become clear to me with this election, very few people in this country give a rats ass about the Constitution, the Rule of Law, or small d democracy / constitutional republic.

A strong majority sees that system as broken and not working for them. Tell them all you want that it’s the system functioning basically as it was intended by the Founders.

They. Don’t. Give. A. Shit!

This perception is what I have a problem with.

When I'm out and about, I hardly see any real pieces of junk driving around. I go in the stores, restaurants, and casinos and they are all freaking busy as hell. They may be bitching and moaning about high prices but they don't seem to be cutting back on consumption.

Where the fuck are all these people who the system is failing?

Maybe it's the "Facebook" affect and folks feel bad because their lives don't measure up to the social media bullshit they are consuming.

I was joking, but OK.

In my opinion the filibuster should be kept and the number of justices should remain the same.

I don't believe in political one-upsmanship and feel like it's bad for the country.

How quaint!  "Owe the libs" is all about one upsmanship!  That is really the only thing that all the cons can agree on!  That is all of the cabinet being named as we speak..."lib owners" looking to "get the libs."  They don't even have "concepts of a plan" of what they actually want to get accomplished other than that!

And LOL at the Republican senators who are looking to "protect" the filibuster and pledge to keep it.  They are only keeping it because they can avoid taking any painful votes that may impair their ability to get elected until they turn 100 years old!

I hear you, but the perception or the reality is very real from where they're standing. Call it a 'vibecession', @thelawlorfaithful will love you for it. ;oP

The housing market where we are was frozen over the summer. VERY few homes went under contract in June, July, or August. That's unheard of! Spring and Summer are when most people are buying and selling homes. Why? Interest rates aren't historically high, but housing prices shot up post-pandemic and people who CAN afford to buy a home still have it in their heads that interest rates should be in the high 3's or low 5's at most. They're in the high 6's to low 7's right now. The Fed announces a couple of rate cuts, interest rates tick down a smidge but not much, and suddenly September, October, and November have been back to normal. What changed? Home prices continued to rise or stayed flat. Interest rates dropped from 7.1 to 6.9. The 'vibe' changed. The perception is the interest rates will come down and they might be able to refinance at a lower rate someday.

I think we completely overestimate how engaged in the world around them the rest of Americans are. FFS! Google searches for "Did Joe Biden drop out?"  spiked on election day! 🤦‍♂️

Do you think those people give a rat's ass that Trump is a convicted felon? Do they even KNOW?

Do you think they know the number of people in his cabinet from his previous administration who said that he's a "threat to the Republic"? F NO!!!

I have left-wing friends of mine who voted for Bernie in 2016, Biden in 2020, and Trump in 2024, not because of immigration or the "woke agenda." They voted for him to blow up the system because they think they'll be able to get Universal Healthcare passed once the system is blown up. Don't ask me to explain it.

They don't care about the filibuster. They hate the ACA not because it was a "government takeover of our health industry" but because it didn't go far enough and that's the "filibuster's fault."

There are people on the right who hate Obamacare but they love the ACA. Make that make sense!

Did you just wake up from a cryosleep that started in 1960? 🤪

The guardrails are gone. Let Trump govern.

Should Republicans pack the court with additional conservative justices?

There are 13 Federal Districts and only 11 Scouts Justices to cover those Districts. Yes, there should be two more. And, each Party should pick one each in the interest of political fairness.

It’s a political rally for an incumbent that’s going to lose in a few weeks. It’s not a great indicator of anything 4 years later.

umm...it was about the trucks and how the system is "failing" these folks but they can still afford newer very expensive vehicles

the same is true today

if the system has been failing, how come folks are out spending like crazy?

had to park out in the boonies at Costco on Sunday...busy as hell but the System is failing

Getting back to the original question in the OP: yes, ditch the filibuster. No one cares but the institutionalists!

Among those most devoted to Trump are people who have “We the People…” stickers and tattoos. I assume as some sort of badge indicating a devotion to the United States Constitution. At the same time, they are showing devotion to a man who, according to his own Vice President, tried to subvert that Constitution to stay in power when he lost the election in 2020. They then helped reelect him in 2024.

They don’t give a shit about the Constitution, they certainly don’t give a shit about a Senate rule that’s not even in the Constitution.

Ditch it! Let Trump govern and let’s get some shit done!!

For the record, I’ll bet there are a large chunk that can’t actually afford them (to begin with)

What the article claimed Schumer as said and what he actually said were MUCH different.

But here is my problem with the filibuster.  It is basically institutionalized gridlock that is mostly designed to insulate senators from ever having to take tough votes that may cost them an election.  The filibuster is basically designed so that incumbents of BOTH parties can sit and rot in the senate for decades because they rarely have to take a stand on controversial legislation because it never gets to the floor.  Senators of both parties believed this was a GREAT idea to keep the good ol boys club together in Washington so that we have 90+ year old senators.

We see this cowardice on display currently with Trump's insane cabinet picks.  Republican senators REALLY don't want to have to be the deciding vote on some of these moronic nominations.  Many of them would LOVE to pull some parliamentary procedure to avoid accountability like allowing Trump to do a recess appointment.  These guys are addicted to these parliamentary tricks to hoodwink the electorate so they can stay in power until they die.

No...senators and voters need to have accountability for how they have voted.  If they put Donald Trump and a bunch of his cowardly senators in, they need to have the full power of government to actually pass laws.  The most effective way to be able to kick out these nincompoops from power is for the opposition to be able to say, "Look!  This incumbant was the deciding vote to confirm Gaetz and that disaster of an immigration bill!"

Chuck Schumer outlines 2025 agenda if Democrats sweep, eying filibuster changes

if you prefer, I can cite a liberal source from before the election.  It seems pretty much the same.

The only people who care about the Constitution and Institutional “Norms” are, to quote Trump, “losers are suckers.”

Let Trump get his full cabinet with recess appointments, the only people who care about the Senate’s “advice and consent” are losers and suckers. “Advice and consent” LOL! These Senators couldn’t grow a spine to oppose a man whose own Vice President said tried to subvert the Constitution to stay in power after he lost an election. They’re not going to find a spine over “advice and consent” or the filibuster.

Abolish the filibuster. Trump won the election, let him govern without constraints!
