Iam4wyo Posted October 23 Posted October 23 This is a ploy to get the Pac to jump at Grand Canyon. I hope. 1 1

Generally have solid to good basketball and baseball. Probably the one non-football addition I wouldn’t hate. 2
Chalsean Posted October 23 Posted October 23 I don't think either conference should be looking at them 3 1
spc_ops Posted October 23 Posted October 23 I think the MWC is a great step for them. MWC could use the BB boost. 1

From a purely athletic standpoint sure, I just don't see them as a fit in MWC. Having football member only is okay (NIU/Toledo) because its just a money grab and only 1 sport. GCU would be a full invite with a seat at the table. I don't know, just my thinking on it. I can see the advantages of it
HawaiiMongoose Posted October 23 Posted October 23 I'd be okay with GCU. Institutionally/academically the school isn't a great fit. But GCU invests heavily in athletics, has good facilities and fan support, and performs well not only in basketball but in other sports (for example the 'Lopes have made it into the NCAA baseball tournament three of the past four seasons). Phoenix is a huge metro with a big hub airport that has direct flights to every future MWC full member location except Laramie. 3
OrediggerPoke Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Any word if University of Phoenix will be joining too? 2 6

Bigd Posted October 23 Posted October 23 I'm not normally a fan of non-football members (outside of Gonzaga), but they make a lot of sense and would hopefully help us keep basketball as a multiple bid league.

GCU is a private Christian school with a massive mostly-online enrollment (125,000) that's ranked by USN&WR in the bottom quartile of national universities. Not exactly a great fit with a group of public state flagship and land grant research schools. I'm sure the MWC presidents have qualms about that. But on the flipside, GCU has been trying to mold itself into a more traditional university over the past decade. The school bills itself as Christian but isn't affiliated with any specific denomination. It grants masters and doctoral degrees and is recognized in the Carnegie classifications as a Doctoral/Professional university. It's not selective with an 83% applicant acceptance rate, but that's not out of line compared to many large universities, including several that will be staying in the MWC (UNLV 85%, Nevada 86%, Wyoming 97%), a majority of those comprising the new Pac (Oregon State 83%, Boise State 84%, Washington State 85%, Colorado State 91%, Utah State 94%, Fresno State 95%), and some the MWC has approached or may consider for membership (Sam Houston State 85%, Texas State 88%, Sac State 94%). And GCU has built out a 100-acre campus that now houses over 25,000 resident students. Also as traditional schools work to increase their online offerings they're moving toward a model that's more like GCU's. The lack of institutional fit bothers me too (aside from Air Force, Hawaii is the most selective and academically highest-rated school in the future MWC), but not enough to be against the addition if the negotiations are successful.
KingSpartan Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Would we all feel different about Idaho if they had an outdoor football stadium? 1

I don't mind the Kibbie Dome. It actually makes sense for the Moscow climate, and its 16K capacity isn't an issue now that the NCAA has eliminated the 15K minimum attendance requirement for FBS schools. Plus Idaho's new on-campus arena is really nice. My issue with Idaho is its $23 million athletic budget, which is only half the average athletic budget of the current lineup of schools that will be staying in or joining the MWC. That's also my issue with Tarleton State ($22 million) and biggest concern about NIU ($25 million).

Idaho is a better fitr for the new PAC-12 - Right next to WSU, just down the road from Gonzaga - travel partners & can play both on roadies -- Plus back around 1924 Idaho was in the old PACIFIC CONFERENCE The PAC-12 can bring them home !!! 1 1

jdgaucho Posted October 23 Posted October 23 GCU would be a great add. I've been high on them for years. Location is right, the arena size is right. They're new money for a new era. The MW would be closer to sponsoring men's soccer with GCU, Air Force, UNLV and SJSU. Only need two more members for it. Bring in OSU, SDSU, Gonzaga and Sac State as affiliates and MWC men's soccer is born. As an reminder for @HawaiiMongoose, GCU also sponsors men's volleyball and beach volleyball. They can trade places with UH in those sports if needed. 1 1
