I have friends in the Asheville area. They just got back home after traveling and missing Helene. They are retired military and gun nut right wingers.  Their property is fine.  Minor clean up.  But, the surrounding area was hit by a multi-century event and they are now part of the anger crowd blaming the federal government including FEMA for not fixing everything and pronto.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/14/us/fema-helene-north-carolina-reported-threats/index.html

"Aid to several communities impacted by Hurricane Helene was temporarily paused in parts of North Carolina over the weekend due to reports of threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency responders, amid a backdrop of misinformation about responses to recent storms."

This divisiveness is the result of more than one thing, but one of those things has been the politicization and disinfo lies of Trump and his ecosphere.

If you live on the Snake River plain (created by Yellowstone) you will be killed by the pyroclastic cloud.

If there is one any time soon, I'm hoping for a tiny blow. If it's the big one, we all gone.

They voted for candidates who all voted against FEMA funding.  They were likely against FEMA funding themselves.

Now when the shit hits the fan and they need help, they blame FEMA.

Sorry man.  I just don't feel sorry for these people.  Not one bit.

They are mostly ignorant of what FEMA is/does and how resource-strapped that federal agency and the entire system is especially in trying to deal w/multi-century catostophic weather events.  I'm pretty disgusted with the blame game which has partly stemmed from Trump and right wing disinfo, but I've got empathy for folks who lost most or everything and communities destroyed forever.

I hear you and I get it.  Not unlike the 'defund the police' thing.

Until if affects you it doesn't matter.  Then once it does, all of a sudden things change.  Like the anti-gay pols who find out that whooops....they got a gay kid.

I know that area is mostly being ignored but no one ever talks about the towns that burn down because of wildland fires.  Several years ago my daughter went to Georgia in the spring to help with prescribed burns.  All the locals asked where she was from (because she didn't have a southern accent) and told them Boise, Idaho.  Then they all warned her about the bears (which Georgia only has black).  She thanked them but was surprised that they didn't know Idaho had black bears as well as grizzlies.  She's seen them in Idaho and Glacier national park but says those are tiny compared to the Alaska grizzlies.

Last year before the hurricane season began, FEMA was warning funds were depleted.  That was around the time locales in the Keys had water temps above 100° F.  That situation was ominous. Helene's incredible swath and geography just is not something the federal government is prepared for.  The warnings of that went unheeded for years.  It does remind me of the Western wildfire situation and others (ex: pandemic warnings esp. after SARS1).  Long term planning and preparation isn't something we ace.

They don't want to find FEMA when it's for someone else but goshalmighty they want it yesterday when it's them

This brings us to treat others thee way you would like to be treated and that means with programs like FEMA and other assistance programs because all these people are your neighbors and individuals as worthy of help and consideration as you are. We used to be a generous people full of grace. We project ourselves and it's not very pretty of late.

Almost a form of bunker mentality

Where nature is "attacking" people.

They didn't want the FEMA help.  Don't ask for it then.

Empathy for others doesn't seem to hit home with MAGAts.  But when THEY need help or something they were previously against and voted against, it's a national travesty and proof positive on how Gov doesn't help 'the people'.

I would not assume all affected are MAGAs. NC is purple and the Boulder of the East (Asheville) was hard hit including the hippie folk singer hamlets above and around.   Not that your ideology matters nor does who you voted for and what those reps voted for/against.  The misinformation spread there actually hurts those affected far more than us ≈ 2,000m away.

Asheville is a great town.  I've been there. It was fun and beautiful.  But it surrounded by single IQ necks.

Personally, if someone tells FEMA to go away, FEMA should leave them to their own devices.
