Florida (and I believe a lot of other states) allows you to work on your AA for free while in High School. All for kids banging out those core classes for nothing.

They have those Bright Futures scholarships too that allow a lot of kids to go to UF and the like for free.

also lmao. I heard “I’m a freshman but I’m a junior in credits” too many times to count in my days there.

Rural poors are my favorite kind tho tbh. Way less stabby and crack-smokey than urban poors.

Eh. Depends on what rural slum you find yourself in

We do this in Wyoming.  Both my boys had almost a full years of college classes done before they graduated high school…for free

@Cowboy Up I took some community college courses at night when I was a Senior in High School (not free in California back in 1978). And it turns out that those six transferrable units saved me from an extra semester at the University level. Kudos to you and your boys for taking advantage of that sweet deal in Wyoming.

Well that settles it. We need to get ourselves some urban poors and some rural poors and have ourselves a good, old fashioned stab-off. Last poor standing wins free healthcare for a week.

I’d pay good money to watch that

The rural poor are more gunny and methy than stabby and cracky.

Guns are spendy.  Tho often the rural poor have granddaddy guns they use.

No they just spend their welfare checks on firearms.

There’s a district in suburban Chicago that’s gotten that whole thing down to a T. Very impressive.

I feel like they need to increase those things, make it so a kid has either 12 units or an entry level certification upon graduation.

Having grown up in a city of 4,500 with a per capita income of ~$18,000 (2003 numbers but I doubt its come up much) I can safely say I don't know of many households in the town where I grew up that didn't have 2 out of 3 items: guns (multiple), some kind of pet that wasn't meant to be made into a pet (squirrel, raccoon, mink, etc), meth.

That's the way it should be, my son is a junior in HS and they're talking about him having a "free period" as a senior since he'll have met all his requirements. WTF is this? Get him in a college prep course or something he can transfer as a pre req for college.

I grew up in a fairly large fairly wealthy republican stronghold in a large blue state and the weird thing is these were  Reagan Republicans, I didn't know anyone who owned multiple firearms in fact I didn't know too many people who owned them at all. It's still very red and it's still very wealthy and I struggle to find any common ground between the people there and MAGA republicans other than maybe Christianity.

They both hate immigrants and fegs.  But i get what you're saying, I grew up around the same thing in SoCal.

Free college just cheapens a BA. I’m not opposed to government subsidies like Pell grants or free community college but if a BA is free then it essentially becomes a HS Diploma.

not that’s it’s something I necessarily worry about with multiple professional degrees but I still think it’s a slippery slope.

anywhere else that has free college gatekeeps the shit out of admissions.

i think that Wyoming is doing it the right way. free tuition for a certain level of academic achievement ( more or less equivalent to admission requirements in europe). free CC for 2 years for a lot lower academic achievement. fairly cheap tuition regardless. one of the biggest unsung killers of college costs is just living costs. if you can't live on ~25 hours a week in a place, you effectively can't go to college without massive loans. tbh that is one of the cases where large subsidizes/government built student housing would fix the problem. build those 4 room suite style student apartments where it's 500 bucks a room no matter if the other 3 rooms are occupied or not.

also as an engineer i had so many jokes about "cheapens a ba" that they interfered with each other mr burns disease style and none came out.
