Last night I watched a fascinating documentary about how in the past few years, Uber and Lyft have implemented an algorithm which essentially screws its drivers and cut their income, all while Uber and Lyft report record profits.

Basically, it sends out different fees to drivers, based on an undisclosed algorithm.   Women are paid less than men at both companies.

The interesting thing is that both campaigns have ties to Uber and Lyft, and the effort to stop them from unionizing.

One of the drivers kept saying "Kamala Harris" implying she was to blame, so this is what I could find.

Teamsters President Sean O'Brien was banned from speaking at the Democratic Convention, which reportedly was a surprise.

Coincidentally, he is going after Uber and Lyft.   So that might explain why he was not invited to appear at the DNC.   A conflict with Kamala Harris maybe?

O'Brien used his stump to advocate for labor law and corporate welfare reform. He called out Amazon, Uber, Lyft and Walmart for the lack of benefits offered to their employees. He said the corporations don’t take responsibility for their workers.

"Never forget, American workers own this nation," he said.

Personally, I don't know what to think.

on the rare occasions I use the services, I like to get as cheap of a price as possible.

But these guys saying that they were barely scraping by, while the companies and their executives get massive money made me kind of angry.

So, what are the ties to the Trump? The thread’s title said there were ties to both campaigns.

Uber and Lyft are parasites on American infrastructure and transportation. Big tech always tries to pretend its “innovations” will save the planet (see Elon Musk 5 years ago), but all they’re there for is to make a handful of people dumptrucks full of cash.

Abolish rideshare and invest $1 trillion in public transportation (high speed rail, busses, subways) all across the country. Connect mid-size cities all over the place and invest in electric busses that are free and have stops every 10 minutes.  Tear up the asphalt and throw in rail lines.  That’s how you make a transportation revolution in a country.  Not EVs and bullshit rideshare scams.

Our economy and transportation infrastructure needs to be redesigned from the ground up.

Uber posted their first year of profit since 2019 in and Lyft posted their first ever profit in Q2 of this year and have never reported a profit for a year, so I'm not sure where the notion that they're reporting record profits is coming from.

As far as women making less, Harvard Journal of Law & Gender reported on this....the reason is two-fold. 1) Men drive faster, allowing them to complete more rides per hour and 2) Men were more likely to drive in areas and during times that yielded a higher fee. Moreover, drivers for both Uber and Lyft aren't even required to disclose their gender. Rideshares were never meant to be primary source of income and was, from the beginning, meant to be a side gig.

Right, so the Uber and Lyft CEOs are making 8 figure salaries because…..?

Besides the fact that most of that was non-cash compensation, it's because it's the CEO that brings a company up to the next level, not the Uber drivers. Khosrowshadi has established himself as a successful CEO and that's why he's making 8 figures....and why Uber posted a profit for the first time. But the point of my post was to point out the incorrect assertion that Uber and Lyft have been recording record profits the past few years, which is not the case.

why?

do you believe teachers and public servants are unhappy with their career choices? for the most part, I don't

yes, the folks making 8 figures are smart. they are motivated by $$$ and are smart enough to understand how to capitalize on the system

if teachers and public servants are motivated by $$$, they are not smart because they made poor career choices

Being motivated by $$ makes you a soulless cretin, not “smart.”

As for teachers and public servants, again, they make less $, and people who equate earnings with intelligence forget that some of the smartest people ever were scientists, professors, teachers and public servants who made jack shit.   How is this news?

Great point. I don’t know any smart Public Defenders, though. I see you more as a Public Pretender. You know the old Soviet saying, “They pretend to pay us, so we pretend to work.”

So you don’t think you can be motivated by money and still be ethical and provide a good product? Your assumption that everyone doing really well with capitalism is evil is…….. really weird. You and Akkula should be roommates.

You don’t know anything at all.   You’re a sentient turnip.

Not if that’s your main motivation, no.  And the second half of your post is a straw man.
