Sen. Bob Menendez was found guilty on all counts Tuesday in his federal corruption trial.

Federal prosecutors in New York alleged the New Jersey Democrat accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, mortgage payments and more in exchange for the senator's political clout. Three New Jersey businessmen who were also charged, along with the governments of Egypt and Qatar, were the alleged recipients. Two of those co-defendants, Wael Hanna and Fred Daibes, were also convicted of all counts they faced.

The jury deliberated for about 13 hours over three days.

Menendez pleaded not guilty to 16 federal charges including bribery, fraud, acting as a foreign agent and obstruction.

Prosecutors claimed Menendez, 70, "put his power up for sale" in exchange for the gold, envelopes stuffed with money, checks to his wife for a no-show job and a Mercedes-Benz convertible. The FBI found gold bars and more than $400,000 in cash stashed in places including jackets and shoes throughout his home, prosecutors said.

"It wasn't enough for him to be one of the most powerful people in Washington," federal prosecutor Paul Monteleoni said during his closing argument on July 8. "Robert Menendez wanted all that power and he also wanted to use it to pile up riches for himself and his wife."

Now, the Senate needs to expel him.

They're all dirty.

Chuck Schumer's net worth is $81 million despite never working in the private sector.

How'd he manage that?

The $81 million figure cited for Schumer originates from an Indian website that regularly shares false net worth figures. False financial claims against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, which The Dispatch Fact Check debunked last month, originated from the same site.

So, how much is Schumer actually worth? Members of the U.S. Senate are required by the Ethics in Government Act, Senate Rule 34, and Senate Rule 41, to file financial disclosure reports (FDRs) each year they are in office. FDRs require individuals to indicate only which range of values an asset falls within, so they cannot be used to determine someone’s precise wealth. However, they are the most reliable source of financial information for many elected officials.

In his 2023 FDR, Schumer reported $100,001 to $250,000 of savings held jointly with his wife at the Congressional Federal Credit Union, and an additional $15,001 to $50,000 held jointly at Citibank. His only individual holding was an IRA account worth between $1,001 and $15,000, and the only reported liability was a jointly held mortgage worth between $100,001 and $250,000.

Alongside his personal holdings, Schumer reported several accounts belonging solely to his wife, Iris Weinshall, who served as commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation from 2000 to 2007 and now serves as the CEO of the New York Public Library. The accounts belonging to Weinshall include a New York State retirement and pension plan worth between $260,000 to $775,000, an IRA worth between $1,001 to $15,000, a City University of New York annuity plan worth between $42,000 and $185,000, a New York Public Library tax-deferred annuity plan worth between $450,000 and $1.1 million, and $1,001 and $15,000 in savings held at the Municipal Credit Union.

Schumer’s exact net worth cannot be calculated from these numbers alone, however, his FDR suggests that his total wealth is significantly less than the $81 million claimed by the post. Even using the highest possible estimate for every reported asset value, Schumer and his wife’s combined assets totaled only around $2.5 million in 2023.

Hell, she's worth more than he is.

Glad he was convicted. I'm sure the rotten bastard will appeal and use that as grounds to keep his Senate seat and keep selling his votes.

Likely course in that case but the Senate can still give him the boot.

I doubt this is accurate, that the totality of his wealth is in his IRA and savings.

He must be investing. What does his stock portfolio look like?

And, the elite have ways of hiding assets in different corporations and holdings. I mean, the Bidens have something like 20 different shell companies to move money around.

More accurate than some Indian website. All of that would/should be in his financial disclosure statement, using a broad range of values as indicated in the article.  Bunch of mutual funds in there.  Still got a mortgage, too.

Shell companies.  IOW...spitballing.

Out of all the crazy shit that has been happening in politics this is one of the most batshit of all. It's hilarious and I am glad they found that idiot guilty.

Just to be sure, did we confirm it was not a gratuity? SCOTUS would like to know. Maybe they will get to find out?
