EU To Require Speed Limiter Technology In Every Vehicle

Recommended Posts

  • Nevada Convert changed the title to EU To Require Speed Limiter Technology In Every Vehicle

LOL, guess you missed this info for a California rant.

California's State Senate passed SB961 in May. The bill is now in the Assembly.

SB961 would require passive speed devices in cars by 2032 that would beep/buzz/warn when someone is 10 mph over the speed limit. If passed it probably means cars in other states would have it also.

The passive devices are just an "what was old is new again".

"In the good old days" I remember many cars were equipped with a manual speedometer warning. You used to set a marker/arrow to the maximum speed you wanted to drive at (such as the speed limit or a little over). The speedometer would buzz when your speed touched or exceeded that mark to help avoid too many speeding tickets.

I cannot fathom how annoying these things will be when they are wrong about the speed limit and the option is "get passed by everyone and go dangerously slowly" or "get constantly screamed at"

If safety is the priority, they should make it so the car automatically moves you out of the left lane when it detects you not going at least 10mph over the speed limit.

They’ll be easy to bypass.

How would that work in places like Germany where they don't have a strict speed limit on their autobahn?

Frankly we need that in the U.S. The speed limits here are in many cases arbitrary, and even police officers regularly exceed the limit.

First step.

The original bill called for an active speed limiter. Vehicles would not be able to exceed 10mph over the road speed limit (except for emergency vehicles).

But the bill was amended to a passive system to get it passed for now.

I will not be surprised to see a future bill change it from a passive to an active system requirement.

Next up....govts will query your car where ever you go and send you a tax bill.

Already being done by insurance agencies that send you an annual spedometer statement to determine your rates.  And I guess also what you already pay in taxes at the pump.

Haven't seen the speedo statement thing.    I think Oregon was proposing a mileage tax with the main concern being EVs that dont pay gasoline taxes.   At least that was before they were a failed fad.

Washington is planning one as well, vetoed by Gov Inslee from going in place next year, but will be a thing - likely by 2035.

as an ever increasing percentage of the nationwide fleet moves to EVs and hybrids, something must change in the way we fund our transportation network

Yeah, will likely be a yearly odometer check or something. GPS tracking a non-starter for everybody.

Yeah Geico sends me one every six-months.  I agree with the fact EVs mitigate the gas taxes being collected.  Won't be long until everyone is required by law to stick a device into the OBD port.

Then you need to find a new insurer.

EVs will be a good thing in the south and southern cities for 1/2 hour commutes.  North of the Mason Dixon line...not.

Awesome.   My 69 W200 power Wagon is looking better.   The 4.10 gears make x country trips a bit hard.  Top speed is about 55mph.

Tell us you've never lived in a northern city without telling us you've never lived in a northern city.
