glduck
just the opposite here. oregon's success over the years has been built on pitching, but it has hit the skids this season. cole irvin is coming off tommy john and has been on a strict pitch count. he tied the school single-season record for wins as a freshman, then missed all of last year. he's only pitched beyond the 5th inning once, and though effective in those limited innings the first month, he's been shelled two of the last three weeks (@ cal, @ arizona). bounced in-between fridays and sundays, he's moving back to fridays tonight. horton has always had a friday ace since rebirth in '09 (tyler anderson 13th overall pick, alex keudell pac-12 pitcher of the year, tommy thorpe 2nd round mlb pick) but we don't have one this year and starting every conference series in an 0-1 hole has really messed with the team psyche. david peterson has been good on saturdays, outside of a shellacking in tucson last weekend. had an era in the high 2's prior to last week, lost a few low scoring games, has been overlooked with the plethora of other talented freshmen arms in the conference but he definitely looks like one to build around going forward. losing jack karraker to a season-ending elbow injury in the cal series really hurt. he was a bit wild (i think he left the cal game with a no-hitter in place but like five walks, ha) but had a team-low 1.29 era in 5 starts before the injury. not bad for a sunday guy. prior to the injury, we were able to pitch irvin for 4-5 innings on friday and team him with a jc transfer named connor harber to finish the game. it was kind of unorthodox, but between the two of them they'd go 9 innings and preserve the bullpen for saturday/sunday. once karraker got hurt, irvin was moved to sundays and harber started fridays, which would be fine... if harber had friday-level stuff... which he doesn't. he's swapping places with irvin starting this weekend. the hitting blows, but oregon has never made a name for itself with offense (uh, in baseball). but it's especially bad this year, which is odd/irritating, because there's really not a black hole in the line-up. everybody can kinda hit. we've had seasons in the past where our 7th, 8th, and 9th hitters were barely high-school level, and we'd give up 9 easy outs a game. not so this year. people can put bat to ball............ but nobody can get a hit with a RISP. we had 33 hits last weekend against arizona, and got swept because a runner reaches second base and suddenly we can't lift a bat off our shoulders. the problem has gotten so bad that the coaches are stretching plays out way too long and sending runners home on plays where there's a very low probability the runner will score. we're banking on a bad throw or a dropped ball, because we're more likely to score on an error than an additional clutch hit. oregon is 18-12, not "horrible", but we're 2-7 in pac-12 play and with the conference being so strong the odds of bouncing back aren't strong. going to try to catch our breath with a home series against 12-14 michigan state this week, but then it's back in action next week against oregon state, who OWNS us on the diamond. KUGRDON
On Thursday 4 cougar hurlers combined to limit #12 Cal to 4 hits and 2 runs while earning a 4-2 victory. Today Cougar ace Joe Pistorese held the Golden Bears to 4 hits while cruising to a complete game 4-0 shutout. In taking these two wins, WSU hung losses on two previously undefeated Cal pitchers. Cal has now lost three in a row, it's longest losing streak of the year, and 4 of it's last 6. Dare I say it. Going for a sweep of the Bruised Bears on Berkeley's Evans Diamond tomorrow. AllHail, how you doin?
All Hail
This conference is no joke and there's no excuses. The bats didn't show up and that's what can happen when you face good pitching. Cal desperately needs a win on Sunday As a home sweep to WSU won't look good on the ole resume. Cal's team is very young and the majority of our impact players are freshman, which is always a scary proposition when you're trying to dig yourself out of a funk. KUGRDON
Sagdal to Struc to Chapman. Game ending double play to give the Cougars a series opening 3-2 win in Pullman over the Huskies. Cougs rallied from a 2-0 deficit, taking the lead in the 7th then using a strong bullpen effort to salt the game away.
