I finally got around to playing Final Fantasy 15. It's a lot of fun.

I finished the FFXIV Dawntrail expansion. The MSQ wasn't as good as Endwalker's was, but that was a high bar to clear. It felt like two separate stories mashed together violently in the middle. It was definitely a reset for the game after the conflict that was being built to for the main campaign and four expansions finally came to a head. I'm interested in seeing what they do with the story when they start on the post-retail patches and storyline.

FF15 was a lot of fun with all that cooking & camping and the banter between the four party members and that open world setting.

Still haven't gotten to play any games since last April, but seen some exciting ones coming out recently.

Also thinking of upgrading my PC soon. @retrofade, I know you mentioned earlier in this thread about gpus. I have a 1080ti now and want to upgrade to ray tracing. What do you think for 1440 gaming? 4070 vs 4070 super vs 4070ti? Or something different?  Would a cheaper 3xxx series do the job? Or maybe wait for the 5xxx series?

I'm running a 4070 Ti and game at 1440p with my 34" ultrawide. I've put it through its paces with ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077, where it's super noticeable and very cool.

If you're looking to buy soon, the 4070 Ti Super is a really good card from everything I've heard. If I were buying a new card today, that's probably what I'd go with, or if you want to go up another step, the 4080 Super is about $200 more. You also need to take your PSU into account, as all of these new cards just guzzle power. The step down option is the 4070 Super. Your price points are $600/800/1,000 for the 4070 Super/4070 Ti Super/4080 Super.

If you want to wait until the 5000 series cards come out, then you should be able to find good deals on the 4000 series cards as well. I don't think that's going to be until Q1 25 though. I wouldn't personally be a 3000 series card at this point, not when you can get into a 4000 series for not a whole helluva lot more and with much better performance to go along with it.

Going to be curious to see if the new RTX 5000 series cards will use GDDR7 and if that is the case, that's a next generation gpu so the price for the 4000 series should come down.

I have a RTX 3060M and it gets the job done but I second what retrofade is saying because the 4070 has a 2.4ghz boost clock while the 3070 has a 1.75ghz boost clock.  The PS5 itself has a 2.3ghz boost clock and both gpus & PS5 share the same 448 GB/s bandwidth.  The 4070 ti is faster at 2.6 ghz and a 504 GB/s bandwidth.

Thank you for that info. I need to bookmark this for when I need it. I'm hoping to last until next year when Monster Hunter Wilds comes out. But if I go crazy and need something sooner, it's good to have this info.

Also, how important is the cpu these days? I'm seeing some starting points with a i5-14400f. Is that a could base? Can you go lower for just gaming? Or should you go higher like an i7 or even i9?

What about a motherboard? I feel like that is the component most cheapened out on but heard it can cause a lot of issues later on.

If people are wondering about the Wukong game or Warhammer 40K game, get them. Only seen good things about them both. And I've watched a LOT of people play them, and enjoy them. Though Warhammer 40K is a VERY tough game, and seems to be meant to be a co-op game (but not required).

Actually, looks like for gaming, it's much better to go the AMD route vs Intel. Looks like the big decision is 7600 now or 78003d if waiting until beginning of next year. Stick with Nvidia for GPU though, especially for g-sync monitors.

I'd opt for the AMD cpu too if I was building a PC with a discrete gpu at this point.  If you wanted eight performance cores for the intel cpus, you would have had to get an i7 or i9 since the i5 has just six.

What types of games do you play these days?

I play lots of indie games especially metroidvanias and rogue type of games in addition to boomer shooters running on the same engines that powered Quake & Duke Nukem in the '90's.  Might as well call me a '90's type of gamer in that case.  The recent Doom 1 & 2 refresh from Nightdive Studios appears to be really good as you can easily use mods and wads.  I also love the smaller install sizes of said games since they range from 1-10 GB as opposed to 50-100 GB for modern AAA games.

I have my eyes on the ASUS ROG Ally Z1 handheld (the cheaper one that is $500 at Best Buy but often sees sales that takes it down to $400).  The Lenovo Legion Go is also under serious consideration and I like the idea of being able to replace those detachable controllers if the need arises.  I have removed my first party Nintendo titles from my Switch to see if I can just stick with Nintendo for handheld gaming when the Switch's successor comes out.  Nintendo Switch Online with those older Nintendo games plus indie games is something I can really get behind.  A laptop with a good iGPU is another consideration with those older Ryzen APUs.

I too play lots of Metroidvanias, but I'm starting to get tired of the genre lately, however, Metroid Dread was such a pleasure for me. I haven't had much time to play games lately, just a few smaller Indy games because my PC has been in a shipping container since May, and I somehow lost my Switch during the move (it was supposed to be with me, but hopefully it accidentally got put in the container as well).

Action/Adventure games have been my go to genre in recent years like Monster Hunter, the Souls series, Elden Ring, Horizon, and Control. I do try to change it up a bit too with a good smaller puzzle Indy game like Talos Principle and Obra Dinn. Or a huge RPG, Xenoblade 3 and Baldurs gate 3 were too of my favorite games in recent years. I try to change it up when I can, but have limited time to play and there are way too many options these days compared to the SNES days of my youth so I sometimes have to be picky.

Oh man, this game is going to be next level! Never played the older games but finally decided to try MH World a few years ago and completely fell in love with the game. Can't wait for the next epic addition.

I haven't paid for video game software in years thanks to Microsoft Rewards paired with Game Pass.

As much as I want to play NCAA 25 I know I'll be able to play it for free whenever it comes out on EA Play.

I should have waited. I purchased NCAA 25 hoping I could play it before I went back to work, but that never came to be. I purchased it day one and I played maybe 30 minutes total. I've consumed by work and my wife hogs the TV in the game room so she can play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

FF7 is my favorite game. I envy your wife because I really want to play it. But I've been dealing with Sony's junk console since I was a little kid. The optical drive dyno on my PS4 was the last straw for me. I'll shell out fir a gaming PC when Rebirth gets ported.

You are a stronger man than I am . I purchased NCAA 5 seconds after it came out.

I tried playing star wars outlaws. Fell through the stairs at the main city and couldn't get out. Un-installed the game right afterwards. Thankfully it was free with the purchase of an Intel cpu my office bought

I think it will be on EA Play this January given the newest Madden shows up on EA Play usually in February.
