This virus coverage is out of control.  100 dead in China.  Maybe 5 cases here, zero deaths, 3% mortality rate.

What's the fuss about?

The WHO declared a Global Health Emergency so clearly the experts are concerned.  213 people have died within just a few weeks.  In just a week the amount of people affected have risen from 800 to 10,000.  Do some quick math and you can see how 213 can turn into 20k dead.  It’s already a big deal and If this illness becomes seasonal, that’s a pretty fucking big deal.

The media needs something to talk about.

You don’t think we should be taking this very seriously?  Explain yourself.

Goldman just released a report that this will already effect country wide GDP by a .4% decline.  This will have a massive effect on people’s health and our economy.  We should be spending a good amount of time talking about this, taking it very seriously, and spreading awareness.

Totally agree. We can probably all agree that  the numbers we're getting from China are lower than reality, possibly because the government is downplaying them, but more likely because they haven't been able to confirm them. The person-to-person transmission confirmed in Chicago happened between spouses, but if this stuff gets to the point of airborne transmission, all bets are off.

My folks just flew from Australia to New Zealand.   They reported most of the Asian travelers in the airports and airplanes were wearing masks.

I lived in Seoul for a year in 2001, half the people there wore those masks daily.

Right now the Corona virus is to me, what the bird flu, swine flu and mad cow.  Something I'll monitor, but nothing I care about right now.

Trump just temporarily banned travel to the US for all foreign nationals who have traveled to China in the past 14 days.  This is clearly a lot more than just the media needing something to talk about.

The seasonal flu has infected millions with 10,000 deaths.

Put that in perspective with the novel coronavirus. The coronavirus has a slightly higher mortality rate but is less infectious.

The seasonal flu is a much bigger problem. The coverage is sensationalist and ridiculous.

The nature of mass-media now is that ratings/clicks are everything, and every weather event, illness, or supposed conflict is deemed apocalyptic, because apocalyptic stories get clicks/eyeballs.

Perhaps coronavirus really is worthy of my actual, visceral fear and attention, but I doubt it.  I guess it helps that I never travel to Asia.

This could be like the Y2K thing -- people complained that the media over-emphasized it & it turned out to be a nothing-burger.

But how much of the fact that it didn't end up being a bigger problem was because it was covered a lot by the media?

I guess in this case, that'd be a good problem to have -- even if it reinforces the idea that the media cried wolf.

This point is well-taken.  The more media pressure there is on the CDC or the WHO to come up with a vaccine, the faster they will act.

Five days later, now 465 dead in China and more than 20,000 cases. At least six cases in California, but for the record, this story is getting far less airplay than the shitty app in the Iowa caucuses,  or speculation on how smug Trump will act tonight.

I did see people wearing surgical masks when I visited Hong Kong.  Saw some news where it's affecting the ability of Chinese people to use their phones since they require face ID for using their phone and purchases.  Some people are begging for fingerprint reorganization to be brought back to the iPhone there.
