  2. SEC reports $808.4 million in revenue sharing for 2023-24, boosted by Texas and Oklahoma additions https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6119505/2025/02/06/sec-revenue-texas-oklahoma/ The SEC saw a healthy jump in revenue in the 2023-24 fiscal year, even before Oklahoma and Texas joined the conference, which commissioner Greg Sankey said will leave its schools “uniquely positioned” for revenue sharing with athletes. The conference announced Thursday that it was distributing $808.4 million to its schools for the 2023-24 fiscal year, an increase over the $741 million distributed in 2022-23. The amount the 14 schools in the SEC last year only inched up, from $51.3 million to $52.5 million. But that’s because Oklahoma and Texas received a cut: $27.5 million each, a combination of a refund of their 2021 application fee ($15 million) and a separate “transition payment” ($12.5 million). If the $808.4 million was evenly divided among the current schools it would have been about $50.5 million per school. But the SEC’s revenue is expected to go up much higher for the current fiscal year: The new television contract with ESPN began, and there will be money from the expansion of the College Football Playoff. In the new deal, ESPN agreed to pay an additional $300 million annually for its biggest games, including the SEC championship, replacing the $55 million CBS was paying annually. That brought ESPN’s total annual commitment, including other football games, other sports and the SEC Network, to $811 million.
  3. After a flurry of de-commitments, USC is currently ranked #104th -- with only four commits left over from Helton. https://247sports.com/college/usc/Season/2022-Football/Commits/ There is an over/under game going on whether any of these four actually end up signing with the Trojans. Offensive line is a HUGE need.

  5. The Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee sent a letter to the GAO asking for a review of how student fees for athletics are impacting college costs. Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) specifically seems interested in "federal student aid provided under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (Title IV) provides students with grants and loans to cover the costs of tuition, fees, and other education-related expenses. At the same time, the data on spending on college athletics raises distinct questions about how schools fund their athletic programs and the extent to which Title IV student aid subsidizes these costs through students’ tuition and fees.” https://edworkforce.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=412173 https://edworkforce.house.gov/uploadedfiles/ltr_to_gao_athletics.pdf The next athletic department financial squeeze may be starting up.
  6. Neal from West Virginia out. Fresno and Utah St. are looking for new coaches. UNLV potentially as well depending on how the playoffs go
  7. I'm posting a video here that @SWspartan posted in a thread about Sac State below. It's got some great info that we should all look at. Why copy it to a new thread? Because I think the whole picture of the House Settlement and how it will affect realignment and NIL deserves it's own thread. The impacts are going to have some far reaching consequences. Some of them probably good, but it mostly looks bad to me.

UNLV is selling Sam Boyd Stadium to Clark County.

  12. Boise State 8th and UNLV 23rd in final AP Poll. By all measures, a very successful season for the MWC's top teams . BYU at 13 makes me want to puke though. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43505627/natl-champion-ohio-state-tops-final-ap-college-football-poll

  15. https://footballscoop.com/news/temple-to-assess-options-with-football-program-president-says Could be first casualty of the revenue sharing. It would be hard to raise revenue when you can't fill a NFL stadium and also there were efforts to build an on campus stadium that went nowhere. There's also the Big East for basketball if the Owls decide to go that path.

  17. On Saturday night, my kids and I ate at the mall for dinner and then we went to the Apple Store. Since the initial hype slowed down on the Apple Vision Pro headset, I asked if I could demo it and they had a time slot available. I am more than impressed by what you can do with VR while watching live sports. While there are its challenges ($3,500 price tag and being anti-social during the game), all I can say is wow - I would love to watch Hawaii football with this thing. I could imagine replay views from the QB perspective. The head referee perspective. You feel you are right on the field. Anyways, in 10 years, this will be mainstream. The tech is ready, just need the price to come down.
  18. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6033148/2025/01/03/college-football-recruiting-all-americans-nil-transfer-portal/ We spoke to more than 30 players and granted them anonymity so they could speak candidly on topics such as NIL, the transfer portal, campus visits and more. Based on conversations you’ve had with college programs (coaches, NIL directors) and other elite recruits, how much are you expecting to get paid in your first year in college? What is a baseline number for your position at a Power 4 program? I know athletes who get a pretty penny in the SEC. It all depends on how bad the school needs the player. With Bryce (Underwood), Michigan needed a quarterback. So, he’ll get paid as much as $12 million to go to Michigan. For an All-American offensive tackle, base $1.5 million. I don’t have an agent, but an All-American offensive tackle should get $100,000 at least. That’s what my peers have said and what I’ve heard early. I’m not really about comparing money as a quarterback. It’s kind of crazy nowadays. I think it depends on the school, size of the school and what they can give you. If we’re talking about All-Americans, that’s six figures to start. It depends on which college you go to. They all spend different amounts on freshmen. As a defensive end going to a Power 4 school, I’ve been told $60,000 to $80,000 a semester. Every contract is different. You can sign a two-year, three-year deal. What you get after your first deal is up to you and how you play. (Bryce) Underwood got $10 million to play quarterback. I’d say $200,000 is probably a good starting place for a four- or five-star safety. The going rate for a high school All-American defensive back depends on how bad a school wants you or how bad they need you. No low-ball number — knowing taxes are going to take 40 percent‚ $300,000 to $700,000. Taxes are the devil. My agent has told me anywhere from $300,000 to $700,000 for a high school All-American linebacker. A blue-chip All-American defensive lineman? $250,000. That doesn’t include the bag. The second year, if you do what you’re supposed to do, you can get as much as $750,000. I think you should get paid as much as you’re worth as an all-around person — not just football‚ but a representative for the university. As a high school All-American defensive lineman, I’d say $250,000 to $300,000 a year is the number I was given when I committed. That’s for one year over two semesters. They told me from there, I’ve got a chance to make as much as $500,000 to $550,000 down the road. I’ve heard crazy stuff from people here. But baseline: $220,000 to $225,000 for your first year as a high school All-American defensive lineman.
  19. I have traditionally got HuluLive for the last 5 years for college football season. The price has just kept going up. $80 a month just seems crazy now. I just purchased the SlingTv season pass football package this year. It includes Blue and Orange with the Sports Extra for $200 for 4 months. Will be new for me. But it comes with ESPNs, FS1, FS2, NFL Network, RedZone, Big10 Network, SEC Network, ACC network, MLB network, MLB strike zone,NBA TV, NHL network, etc. So it seems to be the best for football now.
  20. Big Sky, ESPN announce media rights extension through 2029-30 The Big Sky Conference and ESPN have announced a five-year extension to their current media rights agreement, which will now run through the 2029-30 season. Under the new agreement, the Big Sky will double its television coverage of football from two to a minimum of four regular-season games each year. Additionally, a minimum of two of those games will air on ESPN or ESPN2. “We are proud to continue our wonderful relationship with ESPN and showcase the tremendous student-athletes, talented coaches, and passionate fan bases across the Big Sky Conference,” Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. “As the nation’s preeminent FCS conference, we are thrilled that the increase in televised exposure will provide a national audience with even more opportunities to watch and appreciate our 12 football programs, a nation-best five of which qualified for the 2024 FCS Playoffs.” The extended agreement also means that fans will have access to stream over 600 live Big Sky events each year via ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
  21. Third highest rated game of the season. Cool.
